I have wanted one of these for forever, but then I always remember I hate to read…
I’ve had one of these for the past 5 years and I still use it every night before going to sleep.
The only downsides are difficulties getting EPUBs to the device and overall slowness starting/password screen. I still enjoy it given these limitations.
We have always loved reading from physical books, but we understand the convenience of having thousands of books on a single device.
We were just wondering how good these refurbs are…
Anyone buy one of these?
I’ve bought at least two refurbished Kindles from Woot (maybe three), and they are as good as new. I like to take advantage of these bargains to give them as gifts — I’ve converted several “I prefer physical books” friends, usually for the reason that they never run out of something to read and are never stuck in a boring situation (waiting room, etc.) without reading material. Also, the lower cost of books is a factor.
I’ve had just about every model of Kindle, starting with the very first model when they were introduced, and I’ve never used a password. Once Amazon made the magnetic covers, my book opens immediately to the page I was last reading as soon as I open the cover. My computer is another story, but I don’t see any need to password-protect a Kindle. Of course, if you have some proprietary material on it, that would be a good reason.
I have the 2015 kindle paperwhite. Is this a worthwhile upgrade? I don’t even think this model has USB-C which is a bummer.
This one is waterproof, which is a big enough reason to upgrade for some people.
I personally have this kindle and I got 2 paperwhite 3s (2015) ( the previous gen) for family, and the pw3s have much better contrast than the paperwhite 4 (this one). I think this is due to the lack of a waterproof layer, though I’m not 100% sure. This kindle is pretty great, especially with 32gb and black background for night reading, but the gray fuzzy text compared to other kindles makes me pretty annoyed.
Gen 10 is Micro B and Waterproof. It does not have the “warm light”.
Gen 11 is USBC, Waterproof, and has the warm light featurem
I bought one a few years ago from here and have had no issues
EPUBs are super easy to get on a Kindle. The best way is to use Calibre, but all you really need to do is email the file to your Kindle account (your_username@kindle.com). Used to be a little more difficult before Amazon decided to allow the “universal” EPUB format.
I hope this comes with an older firmware like 5.14.2 or below. I’ll take a gamble.
Instead of paging through your library, you have to use a slide bar. I love the Paperwhite but I hate all the fiddling the have done with the library. First thing I do when I get a new one is fiddle with the settings to get it as close as possible to what I I like. I realize their programmers need work, but all changes need to include a way for people to undo them.
We also use Calibre to convert books to MOBI.
We gave our older Paperwhite to a disable veteran loaded with books he might want to read.
We have been looking to get a newer one.
I bought a refurbished here way back. It was like new, until I sat down on a wooden bench with it in my back pocket. I destroyed the screen. I replaced it with one of THESE and love it love it. I travel with this and paperback books as backup. I read on mine probably 6 hours a week and charge it probably once a month.
I have bought several and have always been happy with it. I can’t tell the difference between a refurbished one and a new one.
Thank you for letting us know. We are at the VA right discussing this with a patient.
Got any recommendations for a cover for the Paperwhite?
This is the reason that I refuse to ever “upgrade” any software unless I absolutely HAVE to. Invariably, a feature that I use and rely on will be removed with no alternative provided or the GUI will be drastically changed with no option for using the original. ubuntu linux is bad about that, but at least there is a gnome-flashback that makes the GUI like it used to be. blender, though… that program is hard enough to learn as it is, but when they went to v3… the entire GUI is completely different. I’ll be damned if I’m going to RElearn that freaking program! I’ll stick with what I already know.
Bought an older model refurbed a few years back and it was bad, looked so bad on the front I took a black marker and covered it up. Maybe these are better, good luck.
