Yeah, it’s pretty and all, but did Asian warriors fight dragons? I thought the dragons in Asia were good luck, not something that would be fought, unless the warrior were evil.

Is this really a Chinese Dragon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_dragon) strangling Nippon?

Culturally insensitive and should not be worn at the Yazukuni Park without a suicide note.

It is a Ryu (Japanese dragon).
While they are very similar to the Chinese dragons, the way you can distinguish them is by looking at the claws. A Japanese dragon features three claws (as does mine), while the Chinese dragon features four to five. (As you can see in the link that you provided.)

They did not fight dragons because dragons are not real.
But, you are not wrong. While there are stories of dragons eating people, they were mostly symbols of success. Maybe the design has a deeper meaning?
