I have actually owned this set for about 3 years. I was nervous moving from the reliability of my old Apple Airport setup, but I can say this has been pretty rock solid. I liked that I could customize the SSID’s of the 3 separate channels (2.4, 5, & 5), or unify them as 1 SSID to let the device choose. The app setup was fine, and the app works fine. I don’t use it much because I don’t really have to mess with anything. It’s kind of set and forget. I might have to reboot the main or a node every once in awhile, but not enough to be annoyed. Maybe like 3-4 times a year.
Speed has been fine, and we have had no real issues. Internally, file transfers average about 5-600mbps across wireless devices, and about 700mbps if going from wireless-to-wired. This is fairly normal in my experience, as 1gbps is the theoretical max throughput for wired on this system (under perfect conditions).
Coverage has been great, and I don’t have dropped connections. The 3-pack covered a half-acre yard, with the lowest connection speed at 15mbps at the extreme corners away from the house. I added a 4th one, which expanded coverage to my neighbors yards. Adding a node was pretty simple, and I like that it works with other Velop products if you want to add them for expansion.
I have liked the reliability of this model enough that I have decided to stick with it, even though it is just AC (Wifi 5). It was tempting to move to a newer 6E version of this, and use these as extenders, but you can’t copy the setup over, and would have to start fresh. I chose instead to keep adding nodes to this one for now to maintain a consistent strong signal outside.
Overall, if you want a premium mesh that allows multiple SSID’s, and don’t mind last gen, I would go with this system. Especially at this price ($120, or $40 a node).
