Lytro ILLUM Light Field Digital Camera

There’s an excellent explanation of this kind of photography here. A lot of folks don’t understand and aren’t interested in this kind of photography and that’s fine, but if you do understand it, you can capture some really fascinating pictures.

Someone please buy these so they stop showing up every week!

I scored a brand new one for $150 and love it. You MUST get the Desktop 5.0 software and learn its “DepthFX” to truly take control of the cool layering options. My fave is using depth (an object’s distance from the camera) to key objects in & out the same way I use a greenscreen to key in & out. Also makes it very easy to have say a saturation-tweaked bouquet in the foreground, and instantly change the background to black & white.

Here’s a slightly over-drawn out video showing how to isolate and manipulate any object in the photo based on its depth/distance from the camera.

VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Lytro’s entire hand-held camera line has been discontinued, so future support options will be few and far between…
That being said, the build quality & rubberized finish seem robust enough to knock about a bit without too much worry. And the Desktop 5 software seems stable, no crashes so far.

For $150 I’d be in too. But for over $300 I still think it’s too much.

come on tell us… lol
now that I’m busted at buying it for anything more than $150 lol
tell the truth
LOL

Am I missing something I don’t see any warranty information anywhere? I know the company has exited the consumer camera market and is focusing on virtual reality equipment so is there any warranty with this thing or is it a buy it and hope for the best?

It’s noted at the end of the features. It has a 1-year warranty with Lytro.

Easiest way to kill the sale of something is to elude that they got a better deal but never tell how to do it yourself. That one post probable will stop them from selling a significant amount.

If one comment on a second-tier retail site like Woot is enough to kill sales, maybe people shouldn’t be buying it anyway. I’m sure it is a fine product, and I have not seen a better price, but I haven’t been looking and am only here because I’m just a bit curious about this type of camera. From a consumer point of view, if you don’t know anything about light field tech and just want a good camera, this probably isn’t the one. And of course you should shop around, and at least check prices with the usual suspects before ordering anything here, or anywhere.

i don’t see anything about discontinuing the ILLUM on the Lytros press release page. Where are you getting your information from?

For all those who questioned how I got one for $150, it was from a seller local to Lytro’s headquarters who was liquidating Lytro’s old stock Illum cameras. These cams were manufactured with the original Version 1 firmware (with the white “net” startup logo) but it took me all of 2 minutes to upgrade to Version 2 w/a free download from Lytro. The cams also did not come with a tulip lens hood. Got one of those off eBay for $15. So all-in it cost me $165.
And to prove I’m not full of sh!t regarding Lytro’s discontinuing of consumer cameras… HERE is a link to Lytro’s December 14, 2015 blog posting from President and CEO Jason Rosenthal, stating that the company has completed its “transition from the consumer camera market, to Virtual Reality”.
Lytro’s only current product is a 360 degree six-axis VR camera called the Immerge, said to cost several hundred thousand dollars.
