What are the shelves comprised of, MDF or some type of wood?

The company had issues with these in 2012 and the Espresso is as close to black as they can get without calling it black. So fair warning. I own 10 of these sets and we use them for the shadow-box type items we have collected from different countries. They do attract dust and don’t expect to put as much in them as you may on top of them.

MDF construction in three sizes: small, medium, and large
• Small: 5x5" and holds 2 pounds; Medium: 7x7" and holds 3 pounds; Large: 9x9" and holds 4 pounds

They routed hanging holes into the back on the sides which is a nice touch. This method allows the pieces to remain flush with the wall. The four sides are merely mitered and glued. Be prepared to glue them back together after you receive them.

For this price, I’m in for 3 more sets.

For the price, I thought this seemed like a fair deal. I ordered 3 sets (of 3) in espresso color. Total, including shipping and tax, was a little over $30.

5, 7, 9 inches? Bummer! I’d be all over this if I could get 6, 8, 10 inches so I could make perfect Pythagorean displays…
