I had an inguinal hernia a couple decades ago. My intestines were super sizing my bag of goodies. I asked my doctor to fix it. The surgeon put a mesh into me to keep my intestines inside me instead of visiting my boys. It wasn’t strangulated so wasn’t urgent to get fixed but my own discomfort made me want it fixed.

It is actually what is known as a truss and can be used by women as well. The idea is to apply pressure to the weak portion of the abdominal wall where a portion of intestines is pushing through. You can picture pressure applied above these locations. Surgery generally is considered if the hole in the abdominal wall is greater than 1 cm and/or the intestine goes out through the opening and cannot slide back in easily. Sometimes by lying in bed with knees drawn up, the hernia can slide back in but if that severe, must see doctor. As always, talk to your doctor if you have or think you have one.

Son had double hernia surgery at 18mo. That’s when I learned that they can be hereditary and pass to males mostly. My grandfather, father, and all three brothers had the same thing.

Glad your son had the care and I hope did very well. :beating_heart:f-pulse: As a mother, I am sure it was a heart pounding time.

My working poor, legal resident, immigrant Patient had double inguinal hernias. Had subsidized but purchased insurance; eligible only because he was a citizen (non-legal residents cannot buy in the insurance exchanges). His bilateral sliding inguinal hernias came from unloading trucks and lifting 50 pounds of rice from pallets for a market daily. Had surgery sequentially and did well. 6 weeks later back to doing same labor. Tough life. Not something we want our kids doing.
