No model numbers I could find, but an Amazon listing for a Surface pro 4 with the same stats otherwise has an answered question saying you can’t upgrade the hardware in this. I haz a sad. And found another page that says none of the Surface Pros are upgradable at all. Mrph. Which, for a tablet, is reasonable I guess…
Found one on Amazon that seems to be the same as the higher priced version of this with only the tablet for 100$ less. Microsoft Surface Pro 4 128 GB, 4 GB RAM, Intel Core i5 (Renewed)
(beats giant ugly URL to death with a stick)
I checked out that Amazon link. It appears to be the same unit (i-5). The only difference I see is the Amazon refurbished unit has a 90 day warranty while this has 1 year. Not sure that’s worth the $100 difference though. If you’re OK with a 90 day warranty, you can pickup the one on Amazon and take your $100 savings and pickup a Type Cover.
@cxk159, but the cheapest Type Cover I can find is $130, and this deal includes both the cover and the pen…so well worth the extra $100
I support a large facility with 70+ Surface 3s. The batteries are at end of life. They off-gas, expand, and press components with no tolerance into contact with each other. They’re all dying in their fourth and fifth year. I would highly recommend getting the longest warranty you can afford since there’s no way to know the current battery’s number of usage cycles. There is no way to replace the battery so… Caveat emptor.
I would second Phonedog365’s comment, though we never really had that issue with the 3’s, we’re starting to see a lot of issues with Surface Pro 4’s having battery expansion pushing the screens out. I’d take the on with the warranty if I were going to jump in and plan to be surprised if you get more than a year out of it.
If anyone else is interested, check out this teardown from ifixit
Presumably, if you can get inside of it, one could upgrade the SSD. But, with only 4GB of system memory, this item isn’t that great IMO. With Windows 10, while 4GB will work, you’ll run out of memory easily. 8GB is usually what I recommend at a minimum.
Sounds like the batteries from the Ubescrood Battery Factory in Hubei are not up to spec.
The Amazon Certified refurbished accepts items from any supplier and only comes with a 90 day warranty … This product is Factory Refurbished from Microsoft With a 1 year warranty, if that $100 savings intrigues you go for it … but the savings on this bundle beat that amazon link imo
Yeah, if I wanted one, I’d definitely at least want the type-cover, and the bunder was cheaper than the tablet and a third party cover, but with the battery problems Phonedog365 and Chillzatl mentioned, Imma MC Hammer this one.
thanks. i have both surface 3 and 4 - will watch for the battery issue.
The battery is not the only SP4 issue. My SP4 was a i7, with 16gb ram. The screen started to flicker. It was out of warranty. Went to an MS store, they gave me a SP6 i7, 16gb, 256ssd for free. Worth it in the end. Not everyone has had the same experience as me, so your mileage may vary.
There are a number of 3rd party businesses that will replace the battery for you as well as youtube videos if you want to do it yourself.
We got two of these M3 tablets last time for same price. They looked brand new, run great no complaints so far. Got for our kids and they’re perfect. We got the typecover separately and so for $369 with a 3rd party pen that is a VERY GOOD deal. Just asked wife if I can get the I5 bundle and she denied me so otherwise would be getting one of those for me.
