Are you wired? What are you, some kind of narc?

You know those nerds whose code is impeccable, who name all their files according to some consistent taxonomic principle, whose pornographic .mpegs are all categorized and subcategorized—but whose homes look like the Collyers’ place after a flood?

We’ve seen some dishevelled geek abodes in our day, and you know what’s the worst of it? It isn’t the precarious, waist-high stacks of Wired back issues. It isn’t the half-empty two-liter Mountain Dew bottles everywhere. It’s the accursed network cables, festooning these slovenly nerds’ sancta like yuletide garlands. They hang from the light fixtures; they snake through heating ducts; they’re stuffed through crudely-punched holes in the drywall. They run from room to room, strewn all over the floor, harvesting dust bunnies like miniature dredging nets. They’re a straight-up, grade-A, first-class mess.

“Oh,” the geek will say of this eyesore, “that’s just temporary, until I figure out how I want everything organized.” In truth, this guy’s about as likely to get organized as the Wal-Mart workforce, and his “temporary” jerry-rigging dates to the Clinton era.

What’s with these nerds? Why are they such neatniks with their digital data, and such abject disasters IRL? Why must their home networks look like Peter Parker’s high school bedroom after a webslinging practice session? Why don’t they just spring for a few Motorola 802.11G wireless PCI adaptors? We may never know.

The price seems all right…I see these on sale for $20 all the time, so it’s a biit cheaper. And Woot’s shipping is lower than anybody’s, so that’s another plus.
