Are you guys gamers or computer people too? I have a computer equipment question, who could I ask? Would either of you know?

You can ask, and I can try to answer - You’ll likely hear different answers from different people, based on experience, bias, and training.

:man_shrugging:

I’ll take you up on it! What is a QNAP HS-453DX and what am I going to do with it?

It looks like a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device that is designed to stream videos and movies to a TV. You’d basically be downloading content on your computer, sending it to this box, and then you can stream those files to your TV. It appears you plug it into your TV and change to that source on your TV and you can navigate the OS on the NAS, selecting from the files you sent to it from your computer. This would require you to have the video files downloaded, or the music files, whatever media you wanted to play from it. Honestly, you can already kind of do this with an android tv box/fire stick and Plex. But these specialized NAS usually have dedicated storage outside of your computer to hold the files. You may need to provide your own storage into the NAS - as in it won’t come with any ssds pre-installed - but that is dependent upon the product

Thank you for the lay people terms! I received one in my BOC. Retail $700. I don’t think this is a common household electronic, do you?

Oh no not really. This is more for computer type people who download their own movies/TV/music in . . Questionable ways. Pirates. I’ll say it outright - this is mainly for people who pirate movies/TV to play their downloads on their television. Or some people with massive music libraries on their PC who want to have it accessible on their TV which usually has a fancy audio set up. I’m not exactly sure how popular they are, but I’m sure someone out there would be interested. Worth looking on selling on eBay!

There’s a place in heaven for you 9399! Thank you so much. I really do appreciate it. Merry Christmas!

No problem! Happy to help. Merry Christmas to you as well!

Definitely NOT the most common household item, but super useful for a variety of uses, including media storage for your own library. Many people use them as powerful, redundant backups, so that they limit their reliance on the cloud for photo and video libraries, both for themselves, and maybe even for family.

The trick with a NAS is that it isn’t just storage, like a portable drive that one plugs in… It is its own computer, perhaps just not running Windows, and as was said; It needs drives added for that storage. It can help manage media for streaming to your phone while on the go, or use it to remotely access your own personal cloud from wherever. And it does require some work to configure to best utilize the features of that device, and tailor it to your specific needs/desires.

For instance, I have a NAS that stays with my family in another part of the country, as an off-site backup. I have my own backup at home, which refreshes itself every week or two. And I backup the most important things to the NAS as well, but only every couple of months, should something ever happen to my house. And likewise, I keep a NAS at my house for my parents, and my brother, as their backup location. Not cloud storage, and not media focused (I use a separate and more powerful media server for that). But still very useful, and a great insurance policy in case of emergency.

Glad that you got some other helpful info here too… But thought that I’d add my brief take, since it’s a very versatile tool, which can serve any of several functions, and even a couple at once before it gets bogged down and slow.

Thank you so much! This was so insightful. You’re the NAS GOAT! It sounds super useful. I appreciate you so much! Merry Christmas!
