My Book USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

Considering 6TB drives were on sale new for $116.29 just two weeks ago, and are presently $124.95 over at the mothership, this is a terrible deal for a Factory Recertified 5TB HDD.

Come on guys, what’s going on?

You were selling new 2.5" 3TB WD drives for $44.99 just a few months ago – and 2.5" drives are consistently more expensive (even at the same capacity) than their 3.5" counter-parts.

Ugh. I was expecting a 8 TB for 109 in a refurb. As the other poster pointed out, I got a new 4 TB for 99 dollars. Drop the price 20 bucks and I would think about it.

You can get a 8tb seagate drive from the mothership for 150 and have seen them on newegg for under 140. I have 3 myself and even picked up a referbed 16tb mycloud drive for 299.00 off ebay a few months back to add to my other 4tb mycloud drives and my 24tb NAS system. One can always just get an external BYOD box, upgrade your PC with bigger drives and install those PC drives in your external box. IMO, this is pricey for a 5tb drive system. If you wonder how well 5tb and other size drives do, this website has good statistical data for MTBF’s on brands and sizes. I run Seagates and just put a 10tb HGST drive (now owned by WD) in my main home PC. The ONLY western digial drives/boxes I have are 2x 4tb myclouds and the 16tb (dual WD 8tb red drives). My SSD’s are Samsung, PNY and Crucial. The ONLY failure I’ve had in the past 8 years was a 3tb WD desktop drive (replaced with the 10tb enterprise drive). It didn’t even give a warning. Just stopped working. Thank god for backups.

Good product, but for the price and it being recondition not such a good deal. Really not even close to a good deal. This is more like retail pricing for a new one.

I wouldn’t use a Seagate drive if it were given to me for free. I am CONSTANTLY replacing Seagate drives in our datacenters- they are trash.

I have two brand new 6tb seagate drives from Costco purchased for $109 (on sale from $129). As a refurbished item I’d expect a bit more of a discount. A similar 6tb is $127 on Amazon.

My exact feelings on wd.

Does anyone know if I can open up this guy and put the hard drive into my desktop computer?

You could, but why? You can get new bare drives cheaper.

Yes, I do this all the time with 6TB and 8TB drives. The outer case is essentially a sleeve, attached at each end to an inner frame that covers both ends. You can pry apart the sleeve at the end with the larger opening to unlock the inner frame and slide it outward, pressing on the end with the smaller opening. You’ll then need a torx drive to loosen the screws that attach the drive to the inner frame and a philips head drive to remove the attached USB adapter. I usually find that the block 0 MBR has been corrupted, but since I discard and rebuild the entire contents, that doesn’t matter to me. No warranty on these instructions, the drive contents, or the resulting drive, but it works for me.
