my website is broken!!

I’m trying to change hosting providers and changed the DNS settings at my registrar to the new hosting service. been close to 42 hours and still getting nothing. it still hasn’t propagated.

i’ve talked to the hosting service and they say it should take 24 to 72 hours for the DNS settings to propagate. so i guess i’ll sit here and wait until then. hard to complain to the company until you’ve done what they ask of you i suppose.

in the mean time, just thought i’d throw this out to any web hosting saavy folks - is a propagation time of 72 reasonable? Seems a little long to me. I mean, what if you’re a major company and change web hosts? Certainly they don’t let their sites go down for as long as 72 hours every time they decide to change hosts. How do sites switch DNS servers without extended down time?

That 72 hours may be the expire time attached to the previous information.

The 'net isn’t like real life, and almost all analogies to real-space things we can put our hands on fall flat. Nonetheless, I’ll give it a try…

It’s kind of like putting a “trust until” date on your business card. Someone who had an unexpired card from you wouldn’t even know they should look up your address again, they’d just use the one they already have.

Big companies plan, and before moving they shorten the “trust until” time (actually it’s called a “time to live” - TTL value)

So even though the “directory” where everyone looks up everything has been updated, quite a few places keep a “cache” of copies, and they won’t update those until they expire.

I apologize for invading your forum up front, but feel this is worth while and will only take 15 seconds away from a chat.

Please donate any used pair of prescription glasses to help both children and adults that cannot afford clear vision, to see for the first time.

Not asking for money, just one pair (or as many as you can find laying around [h] ) to help people that cannot afford to see.

I will post pictures and stories from the Sonora, MX mission I will be on in September off site to show you what your contributions meant to the people in need.

I appreciate woot for allowing this to post, and the person with the most pairs sent in by Sept 12th, (nudge factor coming, and send them all together please, so they can be counted) will get a package worth over $500 including a new Home Toshiba DVD Recorder and Dell 5.1 speaker set. This comes out of my pocket; this is just one of many, and I do mean many, charities I try to support.
