I’ve been using a nest for a few years now. Honestly it’s biggest selling point for me is it looks nice on the wall. Sure it does all the thermostat things, the WiFi aspect, the reports that can be emailed, etc, but at the end of the day thermostats are just plain ugly. This one isn’t.

As for it’s features, they’re OK. We have a heat pump. The nest didn’t play nice with it for some time, actually sending my bill up. I’m not sure if it’s been completely fixed or I’m just used to it. The learning part did function well. With a few inputs it caught on quickly and was able to get the house where I wanted it when I wanted it, even with the non uniform schedule I keep.

All that said, if it means anything, when the new equipment was installed for an upstairs/downstairs split system, I went with an Ecobee upstairs. I’m very happy with it so far, and if the nest downstairs broke tomorrow that’s what I’d replace it with.

I have a pair of 2nd generation Nest units. They work well. Firmware updates have resolved any issues I had at the beginning.

It’s worth noting that they have recently released the 3rd generation units. They go for $249.

The 2nd generation units are selling in stores for $199, so this is a good deal.
