The sale of firesticks is about to plummet since Amazon disabled the side loading capability on the stick. The key reason people bought this was to side load apps that aren’t on the Amazon store and now that, that’s gone and the majority of the user base who used it for that reason are left high and dry I imagine an overstock situation of these firesticks coming on woot in the following few months.

I have these and they still allow sideloading. it’s the newer Vega OS based ones that don’t allow it because they aren’t Android based so APKs wouldn’t work even if they allow the sideload concept, same issue as Roku.
It’s affecting android systems. Vega is Linux so sideloading doesn’t work but for the android ones, Amazon has been marking apps as “illegal content” because it’s not from their store. For instance there is a country funded Cricket app called PTV to watch stuff like the International Cricket Counels T20 World Cup. To Amazon that’s “illegal”.
State funded, legitimate, free to stream but because it’s side loaded as there isn’t an official app on the firestore it no longer works.
I get the intention behind reducing piracy but they are shooting down legitimately legal apps. The user interface wasn’t bad besides riddled with ads like every smart device sadly.
I’ve side loaded a few things, including launchers, without issue.
they will block things that have the same app ID as an app that is in the store. one notable one is an app that can pretend to be netflix so you can use the netflix button on the remote to launch any app you want instead when you don’t have netflix installed.
blocking specific apps for whatever reason is a different issue. sideloading remains complete functional otherwise.
