Hmm 2026 Model and already discounted? Must suck

Wondering how this is different than the $900 model they just sold. Google AI:

The 2026 Samsung HW-Q990H is an iterative upgrade to the 2025 HW-Q990F, retaining the same 11.1.4-channel hardware, wireless Dolby Atmos, and dual 8-inch subwoofer design. The Q990H introduces Sound Elevation (lifts dialogue to screen level) and Auto Volume (smooths loudness jumps), aimed at improved AI processing rather than hardware changes. [[1](Samsung HW-Q990H - Sound Advice Review, 2, 3, 4]

Key Differences:

  • Sound Elevation (Q990H only): Digitally lifts the soundstage, allowing dialogue to sound as though it is coming from the center of the screen, enhancing the experience when the soundbar is placed low.
  • Auto Volume (Q990H only): Actively balances volume levels between different inputs, streaming apps, and loud action scenes to prevent sudden, jarring jumps in volume.
  • AI Tuning & Integration: The Q990H is designed with smarter AI-powered room analysis and tighter, more integrated Q-Symphony functionality with 2026 Samsung TVs. [1, 2, 3, [4](Samsung HW-Q990H - Sound Advice Review, 5]

Core Similarities:

  • Channels: Both feature 11.1.4 channels.
  • Audio Power: Both offer similar high-end performance, immersive Dolby Atmos, and rear wireless speakers.
  • Build: The physical size, subwoofer design, and speaker count are nearly identical. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Which one to pick?
If you already own the HW-Q990F, the upgrade is likely unnecessary. If buying new, the Q990H offers better volume management and vertical sound placement. If the Q990F is available at a significant discount, it offers nearly identical, top-tier performance for a lower price.

The math works out to be a ~$400 difference.
On a serious note, do you really think this setup compares to an actual 11.1.4ch Dolby ATMOS setup? This :poop: is targeted to those who think streaming 4K+ movies is just as good as the physical disc. It is not.
However, this is probably the best paired cost option for movie streaming, albeit still overpriced, IMO.

@Craig234 - Doesn’t it seem like the same system with an expensive firmware update?

Yes, it seems like that, though ā€˜sound elevation’ and improved room analysis sound nice. Hopefully the earlier units could get them.

I have s theater room with a 13 speaker atmos setup with Denon x6800h and then I have 990D in my family room. The 990D does a great job. The rear satellite speakers have drivers on 3 sides. I am amazed at how well it does. The 990D is in a large room with very high ceilings so I cannot get the full height effect, but it does immerse you in the audio.

The 990 is the first speaker bar I’d consider for any home theater set. There are some advantages to a seperate system setup, but for the regular user I’ll recommend the 990 any day of the week.

I need to find a good atmos test and compare my setups in the same room.

Other details of the 990D follow, I couldn’t find the details for the 990H but I bet they are similar.

From https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/samsung-hw-q990d

this is an 11.1.4-channel system, and it has 22 drivers in total. The ā€˜bar itself features six elliptical midrange drivers and three tweeters that fire forwards, plus four side-firing drivers and two up-firers. Each of the surround speakers features one forward-, one side- and one up-firing driver, and the subwoofer has a 20cm driver hidden behind a smart-looking plastic plate. Samsung recommends that the surround speakers be placed behind the listening position at a 135-150-degree angle, though the system will of course compensate if you instead have to put them to the sides.

ā€œBy the numbers, the bar has 15 total active drivers driven by 246W of power. In Dolby speak, the bar houses speakers for front left, center, front right, side left, side right, wide left, wide right, and top front left and right. The 15 drivers are individually powered via 12 18-watt amps and three 10-watt amps. Samsung did not provide details on the driver size or material.ā€

New year, higher price.

I think for this much (or even less) you can get a Klipsch or Nakamichi.

Funny enough, there’s a massive difference vs Blu-ray and streaming when listening from a soundbar.
Channel wise would be the same, or much better with the Samsung. There’s no such thing as 11.1.4 movies, so the mix is randomly done by your receiver and or soundbar, which again, a main stream soundbar like this particular Samsung, is going to absolutely demolish the best receiver in the world when it comes to mixing audio and send audio to the right places.
Talk about speakers? Different story of course. A soundbar can’t compete with larger speakers. But do people need larger speakers? 95% of people would never need larger speakers, since most entertainment rooms are pretty small, and a soundbar can actually sound better in most small rooms. You can’t break the laws of physics.
I would agree, Samsung proposition is disappointing hardware wise, but it is more than firmware updates, Samsung also makes internal board changes, which positively affect the quality of audio.
Do you know audio codes and circuitry is a trillion times more important than speaker size, speaker materials and build quality when it comes to audio quality? Do you know you could be listening a record on a pair of $100k speakers and sound much worse than the same Dolby Atmos song on your Samsung soundbar? Now you know.

The 990F is awesome! The H would be a good pickup once it reaches the 990F price, as not much has changed.

You can set most sources to do the volume leveling, and ā€œsound elevationā€ might tamper with the audio much like how ā€œvirtual surroundā€ does.

I have custom built speakers and subs, and I feel the 990F/H is powerful enough for just about any room outside of a dedicated home theater. Sound quality is miles ahead of LG’s equivalent.

Hey! I placed an order the other day, realized I had an incompatibility with my setup and panic cancelled. When I got home and looked it over I realized I had a workaround.

The ā€œ1 purchase per customerā€ limit is stopping me from completing check out. I realize the limits are to stop multiple purchases, so I was wondering if there was a way to remove it since I didn’t actually buy one yet.

Thank you!

It’s set to 2 for a little while. Hurry up before it goes back to 1.
