Nokia 770 Internet Tablet

My tablet was experiencing screen problems right after i turned it off, took out the included memory card and replaced it with my spanking new 2gb card. I was uber excited for the card, but then my screen went berzerk. There were vertical lines and the colors were messed up. For about 10 minutes I got the WSOD, but then it turned back on but with the same vertical lines and messed up colors. =[ I sent it back to nokia via 2day fedex, but before doing so i called nokia to make sure i could return it without a receipt since i had misplaced it. They said I could return it without the receipt since it was still within the one year warranty period when he looked it up using the serial number. I sent it in and i used Nokia’s repair status page to look up the progress, and I found on the page that it said my product was out of warranty. When I called to ask what was up, the lady (who told me she was new and didn’t really know what to do) told me that I had to have the receipt, I told her the last rep told me I didn’t need to. So right now I’m waiting for someone to give me a call back on monday to straighten it all out. If anything, I got woot to email me a receipt so I could print it out and fax it to nokia as proof of purchase, hopefully they’ll accept that. If that fails, I’m getting an RMA from woot and gettin my money back, as I’ve already ordered another 770 from buy.com.

the ‘your account’ link on woot has receipts for all your purchases.

Is this the longest blog on any Woot! product?

I think the Monkeys were twice as long.

Maybe not the longest but certainly among the most useful.

Well if all else sucks then maybe some of us will end up on the plus side. I called nokia about my pixelated screen and they told me to send it to them. (I accidently forgot to take the battery cover off) While on the phone I asked what I would end up receiving after repairs. He said they are trying to get rid off old models and if necessary replace “unrepairable” returns with the N800. WOOT! Lets hope everyone gets one!

i dont know how i feel about that. the new software and obviously better hardware that comes with the 800 would be great, but theres something about the look and feel of the 770 that i like more. especially since it has that hardcover that protects the screen (which is one of my favorite things about it). i guess i wont be upset either way, and maybe ill figure out a way to put the hardcover on the 800 since i didnt send it back with my WSOD unit.

That would be fantastic, obviously. But I see it as highly
unlikely. This is from the Wikipedia article on the 770:

“Another common criticism of the Nokia 770 is its high failure rate[citation needed]. Many users have found when their internet tablet breaks down, Nokia repair service is slow, inefficient, unpleasant and uncooperative. Several owners have waited up to 30 days for their device to be repaired, only to be told it was unrepairable. In such cases, Nokia only offers a refund reduced by the number of months the device has been owned.”

This suggests that the best one can hope for in the event of
“unrepairability” is a full refund of the purchase price.

FWIW I decided to send my WSOD device back to woot for a refund.

i got this & it’s broken from the get go! i have to send it to the Nokia repair service in Alabama.

Anybody else have a problem w/theirs?

go back and skim through the pages my man. about 40 people have had to send theirs to nokia within the first week

Thanks. But, since applications are installed on the OS’s partition, you might want to have a big partition for the OS. No?

the m.usatoday.com site has tiny pictures for cel phones. If you want pictures, stick with their regular website.

You can add me to the color smeared streak list too!

I just read the last 15 pages of this thread and nearly all the wiki comments are here verbatim. Wonder which came first?

Screen halo, dots, network connection error. Out of the box I-tab never connected to the net. Power button works when it wants to… Looks cool has a nice feel to it… Well hope the Nokia tech’s treat it well and send new not refurbished item back. Resell value is less if labeled refurbished unit. I love Woot, but this deal sucks if you got a bad unit.

Well, add another WSOD to the list. Had it for over a week, worked with no problems. Lots of power cycles… but today it gave up the ghost. <sigh>

can someone link to the speed hacks… all I seem to be able to find is the Farnoush unstable r/w speed hack. I’d like to find solely the speed hack.

PS. after booting from the memory card, mine actually appears noticably slower than how it was before… maybe making read speed faster will fix it :\

You want the “ZIP file for 2.2006.39-14” to boost the read speed only. It was noted there that the kernel for 39 was nearly the same for the current 49 version.

I don’t get pictures on either site. www.usatoday.com or m.usatoday.com

Anyone know a GOOD, REPUTABLE place to buy an ORIGINAL, NOKIA BP-5L battery (WITH the hologram) to use as a spare (NOT one of the $1.99 ones on eBay)? And, what about a 2GB MMC Mobile card? You can PM me if you like, but I think there might be others out there interested in this information. Thanks in advance.
