2014 Ōlelo Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles
Grape Debater Notes
Bottom line: This is a very agreeable and balanced wine, though the Cabernet varietal character seems somewhat attenuated. I wouldn’t say it’s an Old World style necessarily, however the moderate intensity of all the components reminds me of well-made French wine from a less prominent region. It’s a good value for near-term drinking if priced in the $10-$15 range.
Taster 1: Good food wine or table wine, great for a potluck or dinner party, not for aging, lacking a little on the palate, seems more Pinot-like than Cab-like, cherry cola.
Taster 2: Cherry, capsicum, cedar, savory/meaty aroma, medium to medium high acidity, medium body, light tannin, low oak imprint, highly drinkable and balanced, not a fruit bomb, no heat, oak vanillin emerges a bit more over time.
Held up reasonably well, but hasn’t changed or improved. Same impression overall, though I preferred it on the first glass or two.
Final conclusion: It’s probably a question of stylistic preference. If you like big, fruit driven wines or heavy Bourbon barrel-like oakiness, this isn’t a good fit. If you like wines that are complementary and have few rough edges, this is a good fit. The umami characteristic is differentiating and unusual given the Paso Robles appellation. I also appreciate that this wine isn’t overworked or dominated by cheap oak ‘makeup’.
