Onkyo 5.2 or 7.2 Network A/V Receiver

I bought the 5.2 version of this receiver from Woot a few months ago. So far, it’s working well with a few annoyances. There seem to be some known issues with “HDMI” handshake where on some receivers when initialize a new source, the receiver takes forever or doesn’t handshake properly and you get a blank or static screen. I was having torubles and read about this on AVS forum. Probably once a week I have to unplug and re-plug the HDMI source to get it to work. And important not also about Zone 2 – you can only only play an analog/line-out audio to this zone, like a USB drive. I also really hate the remote.

Otherwise - it been a good performer and good value for the $199 price I paid.

Question regarding your zone 2 comment. If a digital input, or Pandora is playing in the main room, can that same source be sent out the zone 2 connection?
thanks

Yeah! I paid $3.34 a gallon for gas last week too, and this week $3.12. Thanks!

Hello Prime Suspect; this is Onkyo USA and its Product Support department and to answer your question- our receivers can’t down convert from HDMI input and use either the COMPONENT VIDEO or RCA COMPOSITE VIDEO outputs. You are reducing the video signal if doing so and wouldn’t be optional.

Amazon has begun charging sales tax this year. If you were not reporting your internet purchases to your state, you were already cheating them. This is why state taxes are coming to many online retailers… states are losing money to these sales, despite citizens being lawfully required to pay taxes on their out of state purchases.

Hello extech01; this is Onkyo USA and its Product Support department and we would like to answer your questions. (1) All Onkyo receivers from 2010- present are currently utilizing HDMI version 1.4 from 3D and Audio Return Channel.

(2) As the TX-NR 525 doesn’t provide any TAPE 2 Out or Pre-out terminals- connecting the Bose 901 is NOT optional. As the TX-NR 727 does provide Pre-Out terminals- with any of the receivers that have a pre out you would need to hook up another external amp. For example: front pre out from the receiver to the Bose 901 EQ input then from the Bose 901 EQ output to the secondary amp input. Then the speakers would get hooked up to the secondary amp.

(3) As both the TX-NR 525 and TX-NR 727 provide ZONE 2 LINE OUT terminals for connecting an external amp to power speakers for a adjacent listening area- only the TX-NR 727 provides POWERED ZONE 2. Powered ZONE 2 allows you to connect a pair of speakers for a separate stereo output into another listening area and also control the volume using the TX-NR 727 instead of an external amp or speaker selector module of volume control.

I see the 5.2 is wireless network “ready”. Would I have to buy the Onkyo adapter, or will any wireless-N or a wireless-AC adapter work?

Have a great weekend from Onkyo USA!!

Actually Amadeus; you are referring to the inputting signal and upconversion. Outputting is a totally different issue and is NOT supported- as you can always use the same video cable connection as an input INTO the receiver to support the output connection.

Hello denverbuckeye; this is Onkyo USA and its Product Support department and we thank you for being a new and awesome Onkyo owner. To provide better clarification- the allotted time for the proper HDMI handshake confirmation entails approx. 7-13 seconds (depending on the HDCP protocols of the source device for audio and video HDCP confirmation). As the receiver acts as a hub, unlike your TV/ projector which confirms the HDCP protocols, this time is needed to confirm and rovide pristine audio and video from our receiver. Have you also update the firmware version of your receiver to update the HDCP protocols for auxiliary devices connected to the receiver as well?

It is a standard for multi-zone broadcasting that ANALOG is widely favored and supported. Many receivers stating DIGITAL ZONE 2 are actually passing the signal via an internal DAC and it is processed as ANALOG either way.

If you have any more questions or concerns, Please contact our Product Support Dept for further assistance with this specific issue via our phone number and hours of operation (800-229-1687; option #3 PRODUCT SUPPORT 24 hours a day). We would assist and answer any questions or concerns you may have with your Onkyo product, as we are also available via email onkyoadmin@us.onkyo.com.

Hello keithwoot; this is Onkyo USA and its Product Support department and to answer your question- if you are playing Pandora via the NET- this will be broadcasted via ZONE 2. As both NET and USB inputs and the audio signals are passed thru the internal DACs of the receiver and outputted via the ZONE 2 LINE OUT terminal or Powered ZONE 2 terminal (if using the TX-NR 727 receiver). Also- ZONE 2 can play the same audio source or any ANALOG supported audio source that differs from the MAIN zone.

ZONE 2 is an ANALOG only source- With all of our products that have a Zone 2 or more features they use only analog connections (RED &WHITE) so you need to hook up an analog connection from the source into the back of the receiver into the input that you are using. The digital connection will remain in the main room and the analog will be redirected to Zone2 or the other Zone outputs. So basically- any input connected to the receiver already using HDMI will also need a RCA Composite audio (red and white) cables into the SAME input (i.e HDMI> CBL/ SAT and RCA AUDIO cables> CBL/SAT). Now when you press the specific input for ZONE 2- the analog audio source will broadcast the audio and the digital audio will be broadcasted into the main room.

Hello martybkc; this is Onkyo USA and its Product Support department and to answer your question- you can use the Onkyo UWF-1 USB LAN adapter to connect your new TX-NR 525 or TX-NR 727 to your network. We do not support any non-Onkyo USB LAN adapters to connect your receiver onto your network.

Real world experience: their assistance consists of giving you two options:

  1. to take it to an authorized service center. Said service center will not quote a price for repair even if (in this case) we all damn well know what it is - HDMI board failure. Said service center will charge you $49 to assess and determine that it is the HDMI board, which, locally, was approximately a $400 repair. I didn’t go this route, so I have no idea how much of it Onkyo MAY have picked up.

  2. Offer to sell you a new receiver at a substantial discount. While the discounts are generous (from MSRP), they amounted to about what I paid for my TX-SR806 to begin with. So, I could have the privilege of buying another, only to (possibly/likely), go through the same exercise in three more years. Oh, I forgot to mention that you have foot the bill for sending your unit back.

Very common. They had to make all new boards. Onkyo also makes you send units to third party centers for repair. They are likely unloading units for this very reason. This line cost me so many customer issues I was glad to dump them. I think they were recently bought out. If you plan to put one of these in a cabinet be sure you have a good fan to ventilate! Onkyo knew about the defective boards and did not cover their failure outside of warranty.

Please review the YouTube on the TX-NR 525 and TX-NR 727 receivers: ONKYO TX-NR525 Wireless & Bluetooth Ready! - YouTube

TX-NR 727 Wireless/ Wired Network Setup: ONKYO - Wireless Setup on the TX-NR626 - YouTube.

This should show the ease and overall functionality of our receivers (note the YouTube wireless setup is the same for the TX-NR 626 and higher units.)

As it is a industry standard to utilize independent service centers (our service centers also service other AV manufacturers as well). Onkyo USA is also assisting customers with their reported issues from the TX-SR 606 to other units as well.
