Cant ship to OH but they can ship to New Founland and Prince Edward Island. Hate OH sometimes. I got this last time around and had it wootlegged from NC. The 03 is good but dosent “WOWWOWOWOW” you. The 01 on the other had was very tasty!!!

Well, I decided to just take it home and put it in the cellar at lunch. I didn’t want it to get too cold in the frig @work and 5 hours was too long of a decant for this. I still wanted to open it and taste @lunch. Patience grasshopper l o l. non-expert opinion here BTW

The pork steaks are on the Barbie, actually it’s a smoker I wont be able to give it a full smoke tonight but it should be a good match for this wine.

Color: Beautiful deep Garnet if you hold it over a light it refracts just like the gemstone all while still turning my teeth purple.

I love the nose on this wine, it keeps changing as it opens up. It started with blackberries, pepper and a little flower smell. I cant quite place it so, flowers. Now I get more perfume, kind of musky and fruity at the same time.

This wine is so good, I think I will gift myself a couple more. It starts out really good and just gets better.

I get plums and a bit of acidity and the tannins aren’t the knock you on your ass stuff. It’s a smooth mouthfeel with just the right finish. Kinda like holding OJ in your mouth but better. Acidity, fruit, and a slight bitterness yet, very smooth. You know the flavor that’s left after you eat the Amano chocolate? This is kinda like that. This is a very drinkable wine with or without food.

I gave a glass to my son but, unfortunately he has a very bad head cold and cant enjoy this wine like it needs to be. Poor thing all he gets is the finish, which is very nice but he’s missing the rest.

If you like a big fruit forward wine then you will Love this.

LABRAT REPORT:

Ok Wooters…I’m going to get this out to you after enjoying most of the bottle straight off of a 45 minute initial decant (and while it’s still “fresh” in my mind).

First impression:

Deep, mature color reminiscent of the most beautiful blood maples at their peak of color.

Nose: Immediate fruity aroma mixed with tones of licorice and perhaps a little chocolate – almost flowery after swirling, with the licorice becoming stronger and mixes with the sweeter berries and overpowers the nose in the most magnificent way that a good, full-bodied, muscular wine can. (That’s Australian for bold). Makes me excited to try it, but the joy of anticipation begs me to let it decant longer prior to tasting.

Tasting notes:

Initial taste brings ripe blackberry and pepper, which turns to a more balanced and complex spice almost immediately. Body is powerful on the palate, though velvety, and has a richness to the texture that I really enjoy…tough to describe adequately, but safe to refer to as solid and appropriately fruity

Further tasting finds a smoky, fruit structure at the forefront, wearing an appropriately spiced cologne. Tannins are plentiful and firm; a factor, but not a force…I believe this would further diminish to perfection with an additional year or two in the cellar, if not a good, long, decant (I lasted about 45 minutes on the decant…it definitely mellowed upon subsequent pours). Brawny, but smooth.

Overall:

I really enjoy this wine very much. Immensely drinkable. I’m already a Penfolds fan and I’ve really enjoyed several vintages of the Kanoonga Hill Shiraz/Cab blends. I also enjoy the Kanoonga Hill Chardonnay and any of the Rawson’s Retreat reds as daily drinkers. That said, I would save Bin 28 for a better occasion than a daily drinker, for certain (though it would be if I could afford to drink this daily…but isn’t that always a moving goalpost?). For me, not a full on “special occasion” wine, but not something I’d pop open to enjoy with a Tombstone pizza (gasp…I know). Give it a decent decant and you’ll be pleased if you like things that are good.

My estimated drinking window (based only on my own experience with wine): 0-2 years

Since this is my first time sharing such information…and I genuinely respect this community’s knowledge on wine and tasting, I’d be interested in any feedback you have, particularly with regards to my wording, as it’s highly subjective, but no less helpful if done well.

LabROUS report 2001 Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz

Youthful color for a seven year old – medium dark red with only the slightest hint of brick at the edge. Initial aromas are of very ripe black fruits, cedar/cigar box, olive and a hint of tar. With swirling, the blackberry aromas intensify and are joined by leather, gamy-bacony notes and a bit of black pepper. More aeration yields complex secondary aromas (bouquet) that are harder to describe (licorice, dried flowers?).
The entry is full, supple and viscous, and that texture is consistent through the mid-palate to the finish. The tannins are still noticeable; a bit of astringency shows up early, but doesn’t build or become drying. There is adequate acid for balance without tartness, and a slight touch of heat shows up on the finish. This wine is at a transitional stage where it still has a lot of fruit and a bit of astringency, yet is developing some complexity and a rich, plush texture and finish. I’m confident this will hold up for several more years and develop more bouquet and soft, rich texture, but it certainly is very ready to drink now. Unless you’re really into fully mature wines, I would recommend drinking over the next 0-3 years.
