But I’m kinda fond of the noises X-Box 360 makes when playing DVDs. It makes me feel a little less lonely.
A useful, quality post. My thanks!
I don’t have either of these specific models, but I have an older Philips DivX/DVD player and what it supports seems to be fairly wide. Some WMVs seems to work, as do many XviD files. Since I’ve upgraded to a TV with a USB port and also have an Xbox 360, that old DVD player doesn’t get much use anymore, but it sure was great for it’s time. I’d guess this one probably supports more formats than my old one, but I can’t be sure.
Regardless, I’d say this is a decent deal, even if refurbed.
i did the exact same thing just so i can watch divx movies at my place and at my girlfriends. this player is great for watching axxo movies.
but now it just collects dust since i got the western digital tv hd media player
I see why the price is low - the photo of rear inputs has all it’s labels saying “out”!!!
The file system can only display the first 14 characters of a file name but more characters for directory names :X
So you’ll ‘get to’ rename files. fun.
Neither version can list files by modification time or even alphabetically.
Files- and directories are sorted by FAT table entry. OH THE JOY
The ‘2’ can read HDD mounted in some enclosures but it terribly finicky about enclosure controller chips. If your enclosure has a 500 gig limit: it sucks.
In for one - can use a player with a USB jack.
thanks, woot
so… i bought the Jim Gaffigan “King Baby” dvd today… and I came home all excited to remember that my bro’s exgf took the dvd player with her when she moved out
this is a perfect opportunity to buy a dvd player… but I’m also thinking about buying a ps3 in like a month (with smartpost mailing… i’ll prolly get the ps3 first)
should i wait for a ps3? should i just watch the dvd on my mac? should i just buy the dvd player?! should i not ask random wooters for advice?!
Yes, yes you can. DVDs are 480i. Nothing … NOTHING can magically generate the information that’s not there on a standard DVD. Some brands can do a decent job with it if your TV is small enough and you sit far enough back from it, but you would still very easily be able to tell the difference between a Blu-Ray and an “upconverted” DVD.
If someone throws away the remote you are HOSED.
Yes, you can operate the basic functions with a universal remote but you will lose access to the menu and you will be unable to start (S)VCDs
This is a very highly rated DVD player…that can play most formats…and can also play off of USB drives, etc.

Here’s the Reviews for DVP5992. $49 refurbished @ Overstock.
this will work nice at the camp…in for 1
Depending on the DVD transfer, with the upconvert you can often get picture near the same quality of HD.
Looks like a nice deal. The only problem is the Philips brand name, which I’m not too crazy about.
There’s also the problem of me not needing any DVD players at the moment.
best media solution:
XBMC on XBOX360
yes, iTards, even better than a PS3
If you get your movies from the net, wink-wink, this is the player for you. I bought one last month, $30 refurb too, and wished I had more. Wish granted by the W00Tgods, Thank You. Got one more for me, one for my co-worker, and one for a friend. They like movies from the internet too, nudge-nudge. Down side to this dvd player is the file system sucks, but for this price, who cares. It up converts a 700mb avi/dvix to my 48inch Sony Grand Vega. Not as good as DVD quality, but pretty damn close. What are you waiting for, BUY IT!!!
Most newer DVD players will, but just in case, here’s a region free hack for this model.
We have experienced three DVD player failures in last couple months… with the latest being the one in the bedroom just the other night (gasp… no pr0n). All we have left is the portable that has no remote. Not more than 20 minutes ago the wife and I were saying we need to get some new ones. I said I’d keep my eye open for a deal. It was a sign to see Woot have this one. Don’t care about most of the features… I just want an f’ing DVD for $30. In for 2!
Great player, especially for divx files on a flash drive or external HD.
Highly recommend you update the firmware here:
Adds longer file names and many other enhancements to the player.
