no it does not use DVD-RAM, if that is what your question is asking
It would be awesome if it could burn Blu-Ray. Then again, if it could do that I doubt you could get way with it being less than 50 bucks.

I have this machine. 90% of the time it records in encryption. Without the proper software you will never find your recordings.

Note that this unit only has an NTSC (analog signals) tuner. It cannot receive digital signals.
