Ya’ll ever try to get kids to be quiet so you tell them to have a staring contest, but no hands or gestures? Only stares. And they have to stand on opposite sides of the room.
It actually works. For a little while.

Way back when I was in high school, we had a teacher who would have us turn our desks to face each other, and see how long we could just sit and look at each other in silence.
Some wiggle room for low laughter, but if it got consistent, it would end.
