Is it still possible to send a private message in this community? I can see old, un-deleted ones, but not how to send a new one.
Not sure if something changed or if I need new glasses (or maybe a new brain).
Tap the envelope icon next to a username in the forum, and you can send them a new message.
Once that is done, you can continue sending them messages through the regular private message page.

Hmm. I’d have to find a post from this individual somewhere in the forums. What do I do if I can’t and only know his/her user name?
You can try using the custom search on the right side of the page by searching their username.
That method gave me Google results, but I was able to find what I needed down one of those rabbit holes. Guess that’s as good as it gets sometimes.

Yeah. That was roughly what I expected would happen.
Although sometimes one ends up quickly finding who they need that way.
