I have the Gen1. Got it here for 99 bucks last year (16 zone but only need 8… room to grow LOL).
My take is, it sure was a nice replacement from the previous 15 year old rainbird. The hardest tasks to do (in order)
- set up the network connection. Seems many people have this issue. It’s a hit or miss. If you have a router that supports multipul SSID’s (my ASUS RT66U supports 6 total (3 on each band). I set up one for this device to keep it isolated from the rest of the network.
- Takes a while to set up the zones. Think I spent a couple hours taking pictures and doing some soil research (yeah, it even wants to know what type of soil you have).
I’m not going to repeat what you can find online but I did put it in standby mode around the end of Sep of 2016. I even shut down the SSID. Turned everything back on 2 weeks ago to test the sprinklers. Turned on the SSID first. Then turned on controller. Logged in and brought it out of standby. All settings still there. Tested and works. Nice little gadget. There are lots of cool features but the one I didn’t have on my rainbird and was needed was the fact you can set this thing to water every 3 days or ever odd day and that’s it.
I bought this a few weeks ago on a previous Woot. So far it’s been great. Installation took about 30 minutes replacing a Rainbird controller, even with my 4 year old running around the yard. App picked it up right away but the WiFi took about 3 tries to connect - I had to move 20 feet away from the unit for some kind of interference (Samsung Galaxy S5).
For use - setting up everything was straightforward. I don’t have a rain sensor on the unit, but it picked up the local weather station and adjusts the watering as needed there.
Definitely recommend this.
