This is a really good price! Just a heads up—Ring Pro does require a wired connection. If you don’t have an existing wired doorbell, you can get a plug in transformer on Amazon if you don’t want to wire one yourself.
Much appreciated info concerning the existing wiring!
I have this version of the Ring as well. Works well, good image quality. Installation is pretty easy: there are two wires that go to a regular doorbell and there are two contact screws on the back of this thing. Simple. There is a little adapter that goes into the actual bell portion that is mounted elsewhere in the house, but even that is pretty simple to install.
Only caveat to mention, and this is for all Ring stuff, is that if you ever need to review the video it recorded with motion or whatever, a yearly subscription is $30. Not bad, but be aware.
I like my Ring because I know when packages arrive or when someone walks up to my door. Great for knowing when the kids come and go. Love the ability to have the video on my Echo Show and I’m definitely good with the $30 yearly subscription to be able to review video.
However, these are becoming less and less a deterrent for package thieves. Rings are pretty prevalent in my area and every video I have seen of a package thief shows them with sunglasses, a hoodie or ball cap, and their faces covered up by the hoodie or a scarf. Unless you happen to pick up their license plate (usually too far away), they aren’t going to get caught. It’s definitely better than nothing and pick up other stuff (coyotes, bobcats, bunnies, snakes, etc.), but it’s not the deterrent it once was.
Everyone posting about this should know that the Amazon Blink camera monitors 24/7, requires no wiring, will let you know when your “kids come and go”, or if anyone else walks up on your porch or where ever it’s pointing. Costs less, is portable (move it around the house). Every blue moon or so, Amazon runs them on sale or find them here on woot from time to time. IMO, it’s a better option and during a power outage, they still work. Just sayin.
It sounds like the Amazon doohickey does the same thing Ring does, is less likely to come up for sale on Amazon or Woot! and really is only better in the event of a power outage unless the homeowner has a generator system installed which would make the Ring do everything the other Amazon doohickey does, except monitor 100% of the time.
I have these. They are good but they don’t work in a power outage because they have a plug-in hub they connect to.
I do not have the Pro but I do have the Ring v2. V2 has an onboard battery to still record when power is out but that won’t notify you by itself if your router/modem isn’t on a battery backup (i.e. it cannot reach the Internet). The power leads to the doorbell keep the battery charged.
Again, that is the case with the V2 so I’m just presuming the Pro would be similar.
I bought two Ring Doorbell 2 units from Woot, both did not work correctly. Each one required 3 calls to tech support, multiple emails and many wasted hours to get replacement units which did work. In the end RING did the right thing but getting there was a painful waste of time. I also have a DOA Ring Chime Pro which will probably require similar efforts to get a functional unit.
On the plus side RING tech support answers within minutes, no long hold times.
To tc1uscg: Which of the many Amazon Blink cameras do you recommend? For me, simpler is better. And less expensive is better still.
Having to change/charge batteries totally sucks.
Going thru the short term up front hassle of hardwiring is totally worth it.
This Ring Pro for the win.
Thanks for the info, super helpful!
You do realize Amazon owns Ring too.
There’s actually not that many, it’s just improvements from the last generation. Originally Blink Camera; next year was Blink XT; next year is Blink XT2.
