Rock Hollow Sextet
Looks like it is one of the Firestone Family labels.
From what I could see, it is (or was; looks like Foley bought Firestone last summer). Depending on how they run their side-labels, that could mean anything from Firestone running the whole thing & just slapping a different label on the bottle to letting them run themselves as an Indy operation where the parent rakes in the profits if they’re successful or cuts them loose if they’re not.

I’ve seen a little bit of both in other business; not sure what the wine world models are.

Oh, dang it! Here’s me, all, “Life is too short for bad wine,” and “Quality not quantity, baby,” and “What the hell was mill thinking?” And then I read this: ‘Don’t let the price tag trick you into thinking this is some cheapo fortified Kool-Aid they siphoned out of the gutter at the Italian Festival.’ And this: ‘The value-for-money equation of this Rock Hollow Sextet is so extreme, our calculators exploded.’ And then I think of all the times WineDavid has steered me wrong*. And now I’m off to hit the stupid button.

Edit for newcomers
*= the previous comment about all the times WD has steered me wrong was meant to be ironic. WD has steered me wrong like twice out of a ton of woots. And nobody could possible know my tastes better than that. In fact, I’m becoming somewhat alarmed by WD’s insider knowledge of my preferences. And did I not know for a fact that he has a lovely wife and a couple kids and several very demanding jobs and so has no time for such nonsense, I might consider searching my home for nannycams in an effort to explain his insider knowledge. But that would probably be overreacting. Fact is, the guy just plain offers good wines.

Lucky you, mine still says
Same with mine. Did you go in on this one?

Looks like I may actually be able to go a week without buying. Yes, it’s an awesome deal. But with everything that’s going on, this one doesn’t seem to suck me into oblivion. My wallet is thankful.

Yup, I’m in for one. I mean after the Helix I wasn’t so sure but for $50 for six bottles of wine? I can’t resist.

My mistake, I was looking at the Lucas & Lewellen to be delivered tomorrow, the Helix says

Type: Package
Status: Billing Information Received
Shipped To: DULUTH, MN, US
Shipped/Billed On: 01/14/2008
Service: GROUND
Weight: 11.00 Lbs

My apologies I didn’t mean to get everyone in a frenzied state where they want answers. But its better that they let the wine sit in a wherehouse instead of delivering the wine and having something go wrong with this sub zero freeze we arwe having.

I was hoping for some white this time… But 6 bottles too much out of my price range… and only 2 are white. Until next week wine.woot. I still love you. =3

Here is an article that was posted on Wine.WOOT back in August…

FIRESTONE VINEYARD ACQUIRED BY FOLEY WINE GROUP

August 16, 2007—The Firestone family announced today the acquisition of Firestone Vineyard by the Foley Wine Group, which is owned by William P. Foley, proprietor of Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery and Lincourt Vineyards in Santa Barbara County.

The acquisition includes the Firestone Vineyard and Prosperity Wines brands, along with the Santa Ynez Valley winery and 480 acres of land, inclusive of 300 vineyard acres. The Firestone family retains ownership of Curtis Winery, Firestone Walker Brewing Company and the new family winery in Paso Robles. The family is also retaining the Jarhead Red and Rock Hollow wine brands, as well as 400 acres of land in the Santa Ynez Valley, inclusive of 215 vineyard acres.

“This is a matter of the right person expressing interest at the right time for us,” said Brooks Firestone, founder of Firestone Vineyard. “Bill Foley is a neighbor and friend of ours, and we are confident that he will be a fine steward of the Firestone Vineyard legacy and tradition.”

Firestone added, “While this was a tough and emotional decision for us, we are energized by the opportunity to more closely focus on our other winemaking and brewing enterprises on the Central Coast, including Curtis Winery, Firestone Walker Brewing Company and our new family winery in Paso Robles.”

Firestone Vineyard will be enfolded into Foley’s small portfolio of high-quality estate wineries. No significant changes are anticipated in the operations, staffing or distribution of Firestone Vineyard wines.

“This is the first in a series of brand acquisitions with the goal of developing a multi-brand sales strategy,” Foley said. “Currently, we are also examining opportunities in Sonoma County, Napa County and the states of Oregon and Washington.”

Firestone Vineyard was founded in 1972 as Santa Barbara County’s first estate winery. William Foley established his Lincourt Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley in 1996 and opened Foley Estates Winery in the nearby Santa Rita Hills in 2005. The Firestone family’s relationship with Foley dates back 10 years, when Foley acquired the J. Carey Cellars property from the Firestone family in 1997, which became Lincourt Vineyards.

Adam Firestone will continue in his role as co-proprietor of Firestone Walker Brewing Company. Andrew Firestone will continue to manage the family’s Paso Robles winery. He will direct the re-naming and re-branding of the winery in a manner that honors the family’s local winemaking traditions while incorporating new ideas and concepts. Chuck Carlson will continue in his role as winemaker of Curtis Winery, which is being retained by the Firestone family. Brooks Firestone will continue to serve his constituents as third-district supervisor for the County of Santa Barbara.

couldn’t resist. at that price, I’m in for 2.

i have no idea where i’m going to store 12 more bottles; my rack is already overflowing.

Here’s a twist…
Please do NOT choose me as this week’s LaBrat. I am headed out of town and will be unable to fulfill my duties. But I figure at this price, the bar is set at drinkable. Anything better is gravy. Not that I recommend drinking gravy.
On the road last week and missed the Helix. My heart is still sad.

Now, I know the word ‘hero’ is thown around a lot these days, but I’m in, not really knowing anything about Rock Hollow. You can draw your own conclusions.

And just to try to propel myself into daredevil territory, I’m also willing to volunteer for labrat-dom. Kids, don’t try this at home (at least, not without a reasonably convincing ID).

Has anyone tried any of these varieties? These reds look like a lot of fun.

I think this article may pertain to this week’s woot.

Or maybe I am off…

On that note what are the chances of this deal being around until I get off work tomorrow?

Well, WineDavid was right. I can’t even find any of these wines via online searches. I’m curious to know more about the story behind the winery & these wines. One could be led to the conclusion that they had difficulty selling the wine because no one actually knew it existed.

This is my 100th post, and I wasted it with this message.
Sigh.

Based on my overall rate, #200 should arrive sometime in 2010. Will keep you posted.

(and a Pass on the wine…Got enough availability for under $10 drinakbles here. Unless the l’ab r’ats blow me away)

Yeah, even if it is delayed, this is a great price. Although I only went for 1 when I should have probably went for more

Thanks for the clarification, I wasn’t too worried about the Helix because WD said it would be held for awhile for all of us in the cold regions at least. Which is good if you ask me when the day highs are barely above zero. The price point of these and the quality that I have received from Wine Woot in the past made this one pretty much a no brainer, not that I even really have the money for this. I’m also tempted by the normal woot offering today since I have been looking into getting a new digital camera. These sites are killing my wallet

In for 2. I like the gamble. Especially at this price!

tcklord: check your local sam’s club for an olympus e-500 dslr. locals have been clearing out the last ones for $314. 2 lens kit and a great deal if u can find.

Oh, Winedavid have mercy!

I stumble across WW intent on getting into small-production California wine, and I see the Lucas & Lewellen.

I swear off Napa Valley intent on finding some other AVAs or DOCs in local wine shops - and then I see the Helix three-pack.

I read my credit card statement, cry, then vow that I have enough high-quality wine cellared that I should start looking for bargain offerings - and then I see the Rock Hollow sextet.

But I really really have to stop next week, since I only have a 400 square foot studio apartment and I now have 10 bottles waiting to come in the mail…(like other posters, my Helix hasn’t shipped yet - Chicago’s nighttime low was -5 yesterday)
