Roku 2 XS Angry Birds Edition w/2 Remotes

Does anyone know if it will it work in Canada?

Thanks!

Actually, that’s a good question and since it is so small and uses such little power, it might be useful when traveling overseas as well.
Any thoughts??

There are issues with content being blocked. People mitigate these issues using remote DNS servers and proxies. I don’t recommend this, butit’s possible.

Yeah… I thought that might be the case. Guess it’s a DRM issue. OOMA is one of those things that evidently works wherever without having to spoof your DNS server… so I hoped just maybe
Oh well.

ummmm… were you gonna say something?

Are Plex and Playon equipment or are they services you subscribe to? I got in for one just after midnight since I missed the XS the last time and the Roku 3 didn’t appear to be the one of choice based on blog comments. I’m glad I waited anyway, since this is the Birds edition.

Plex and PlayOn are servers. Plex is free to install and has a free Roku channel. PlayOn is $70 for a lifetime license that includes a DVR. It works much better than Plex, IMHO. I run both on my everyday computer and my interactive use is not impacted at all. PlayOn/PlayLater is 480p but for another $10 (or so – it varies by license), you can get HD addons.

FYI, the only difference between this and the other Roku 2 XS models is the color and decoration of the case.

I’m waiting for the Spice Girls Roku…

Thank you wizwor. I kinda suspected that the case was the only thing different. It’s nice tho’ to have an Angry Bird edition if nothing more than for a conversation piece. Also thanks for the Plex/Playon info. Hopefully there’s documentation for all this when it arrives.

Well, I certainly can’t improve on wizwor’s incredibly detailed review, but I figured I would add another BUY ONE vote for anyone who is still on the fence.

I just bought one of these because I’m kind of shallow and really wanted the special red one with the Angry Bird on it. Our other Rokus (same model) are plain black and now feel a bit not-so-special.

Thanks for the kind words. I can’t decide if these are awesome or hideous. Either way, the missus will throw me out if another batch of Rokus is delivered to my house. As it is, I get dirty looks whenever a Woot package arrives. Can’t we get these in discrete packages like Playboy and erectile dysfunction stuff? I would get less flack for a pair of bunny ears than a Woot!

The pics on Amazon do not have a USB port. Am I missing something?

it’s on the side.

If you buy these as a gift be sure to open and check. One of my boxes was short the extra remote and woot said they had none to send me. (Less than a week ago.)

Not cool Woot.

Underwhelming at best…

Just got this item a couple weeks ago from Woot and didn’t know what to expect. It’s nice in that I can use this now to access my Amazon Prime account and not have to go through my laptop, but aside from that many/most things seem to require you to pay for access, and how many movie services of dubious quality does a person need?

That said, this is a decent price and maybe I will use it more as time goes along.

I’m assuming the answer is no, but no harm in asking: Do any of these Roku devices work as projectors for a PC, as in allowing you to project powerpoint presentations and such? I’ve been looking for a little projector for teaching, but something tells me this isn’t it.

If you save your slides as .jpg files, you can show these using the Roku USB player.

I never had a Roku before. I’m still on the fence about purchasing this particular model because I am not sure if it will work with a TV that is not an HD TV. Does anyone know if the Roku 2 XS will work with a non-HD TV?
