There are a lot of variables to discuss, most of which I will not go into. My assumption is since you are a “newbie” you aren’t looking for a high end experience.
In a nutshell, this is all you will need as long as your projector has an HDMI input. If you have a high end projector or a large room then you will likely want a little more power behind your system. This system will be good for a smaller/medium sized room where you won’t need the bass to carry and fill a larger space. I don’t think you will impress any audiophile’s with this system, but I think it is a great system for the price and for filling a mid-range need.
I personally purchased this system for my bedroom and have a Onkyo system for my “Home Theater” setup.

THANK YOU! I went ahead and ordered one. Do you happen to have any recommendations on a projector?

The NewEgg listing has lots of photos.
I’m in for one. Just upgraded to a 50" Samsung TV, which already has the smart hub, so I’m not too worried about the lag people have mentioned. I just need to get away from using my PS3 as a Blu-ray player, which is a total power drain.

Those specs do not mean anything without the THD ratings alongside the power output. Who rates an amp into a 3 ohm load? Nobody. Granted it is only $149 but who wants a 5.1 system that can’t play loud?

Woot is selling a BenQ 720p projector for $480 (March of projectors, main woot page). BenQ is a reliable brand, and this is a nice projector. If its a small room that will be dark and you don’t care about a dimmer projector, you could also go with the 500lm led one
EDIT: The BenQ may be factory reconditioned, according to ThunderThighs on an earlier sale, this means that the bulbs aren’t new, but have a significant amount of usable time left
