I came here to post the same thing: the product description is wrong. The 2.5" drives up to 2 TB in capacity are 7 mm in height, but above that they’re 15 mm: BarraCuda Hard Drives | Seagate US
You guys REALLY need to fix this, because you’re misrepresenting the product size by MORE THAN DOUBLE and these drives WILL NOT fit in mainstream consumer laptops (which take 9.5 mm height drives max; these are more for servers, or desktops where you can put them in a 2.5-3.5" adapter and the individual height is irrelevant.) Otherwise you’re going to have to deal with a lot of returns from unhappy customers!
Yes.
It will be a while before you see high speeds in anything that compact and dense. Capacity and size are its features, not speed.
You can get 7200 RPM in a 3.5", or be VERY patient for high capacity SSDs to become available and come down in price. (Moore’s law would imply doubling approximately every 18 months)
For now, 2TB is the largest 7mm spinning rust that you can get.
$90 for a 15mm drive is NOT that great of a price. Consider that since it won’t fit in most laptops you will be spending at least $10 on USB housings. $100 puts it near Costco’s & NewEgg’s price point ($95-$110) for NEW 4TB Seagate USB disks 5400-5900 rpm disks.
There is one very significant difference between OEM USB disks and Build-yourself USB disks. Many of the OEM disks are manufactured with a read/write/USB interface circuit on board, instead of SATA and thus avoid using a SATA-to-USB interposer card. The difference is power consumption which can be critical on Laptop USB ports. Some barely supply the 10 watts required.
Putting this drive in a USB housing may force you to draw power from a second USB port with a Y cable.
I just bought a 4TB WD Portable USB3 hard drive from Best Buy for $85 today - personally I think that’s a much better deal (WD - easystore® 4TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive). You don’t even have to worry if it fits or not - you just plug it in. No, I have no idea how long the sale lasts or how many units BB has.
If the product isnt correct, of course these drives will all be returned, but theres not really any risk to myself as a consumer so I’m just going to buy one and hope I get a 4TB? Why not? Woot will obviously take them back if it’s half the size it says… it’s not stopping me is all. But that’s me
I see a lot of people bought this. But if its sold out when you buyers receive your drives, and post qhat size the drive they receive is, that would be very helpful, concidering some deals are offered a second time down the road… so if sold out or expired, buyer feedback would help.
It IS presumably a 4TB drive. But it is a 15mm thick 2.5" drive, and the ORIGINAL description said that it was 7mm. THAT was the error in the description. Thunder-thighs FIXED THAT.
OMG!!! I ordered one of these and just received it. It was a naked hard drive, just dropped in an envelope and shipped!!! How CARELESS!!! I don’t see how this could possibly NOT be damaged! I cannot believe this.
