Broken Old Commode
This is sort of a Box Of Crap(per) story. It’s a saga of epic proportions, so it’s a long read… and really nothing to do with Woot, but it is Amazon. So, if you’re bored, read on…
I had a toilet tank crack and flood my bathroom. I couldn’t get a replacement tank so I needed to get a new toilet.
I ordered a new two piece toilet from Amazon, the “best seller”. It was scheduled via UPS, and it was split into two packages. Both packages showed tracking right up to my local UPS, but then only one package was delivered. I got a toilet tank, but the 2nd package, the toilet bowl, was “… pending release from a Government Agency. Once they release it, your package will be on its way.” Now that just seems plain bizarre. But it did eventually arrive about three days later.
My next problem came when we tried to install that toilet. I think I failed plumbing 101, because I didn’t measure something called the “rough-in”. It’s the distance from the hole in the floor to the wall. I just bought a standard toilet and they are 12 inch. But the toilet I took out was 10 inch, which seems to be a second choice for certain situations.
So having discarded all the packaging and prepared the new toilet bowl with a wax ring etc, I was not in a position to return it. But I measured another bathroom and found it would fit in there, and the tank in there is just as likely to crack (Vortens brand, if you google it, you will see there was a class action lawsuit about 20 years ago for tanks cracking).
So I ordered another new toilet. The same toilet but 10 inch version. This time delivery was shown to be by Amazon. So a couple of days later, the 10 inch toilet bowl showed up, but no tank was delivered.
After a couple of days I contacted Amazon and they re-ordered the tank for me because it seemed to have got lost. But when they re-ordered, it re-ordered the toilet and the tank. So a couple of days later, another brand-new 10 inch toilet turned up.
In the meantime, I used the tank that came with the 12 inch to fit the first 10 inch toilet in the original location. Yes, they are identical tanks.
Several days later, I contacted Amazon again and said I still haven’t got my tank. I received a phone call and an email from Amazon logistics and they said it would be delivered today. I am currently halfway through the window of delivery which was 9 am to 12 pm, but it still doesn’t show out for delivery. In the meantime, I have to repair the flange where the 12 inch toilet is going to be installed because the builders did not install it properly. I’m surprised it’s never leaked.
So now I have a 12 inch toilet (with no tank) waiting to be installed, and a spare 10 inch toilet (with no tank) sitting in a box in the garage. Yes, it’s definitely a sh!t no show.
