Can I use a separate app to turn it on and off? Or the only way to do it remotely is by paying the subscription?

You have to use their app to control the system. The top tier interactive monitoring plan is $24.99/month. The app is free, and can still be useful without the interactive plant- You can view the status and see event logs. You can also change between plans from month to month. I have the basic plan but plan to upgrade the month we are on vacation so I have more control while we’re away in case there are issues (have not had any in the 6 months we’ve had it).
