Things could be worse! Took my Hyundai in for scheduled service and the dealership did a software update. 5 days later the CEL started blinking and the car went into “Limp” mode.
Typical BS of dealership trying to put me in a clown car, 3 weeks later and…
Total Engine replacement… After a software update…
The joys of technology. It can happen to computers. Computers control cars.
Sorry for your loss.
There’s gotta be some recourse with Hyundai though since it was their software update on their car, right?
The following really happened…
We bought a pt cruiser from auction (father in law is a used car dealer) and it worked fine around the lot. Went to drive it back to town from orlando and it wouldn’t shift out of 1st gear. We knew it wasn’t the transmission because it had shifted flawlessly beforehand.
we cleared the error codes and it would shift again for about a half mile then would go back to ‘limp’ mode and wouldn’t come out of 1st.
replaced the computer = nada
replaced fuses = nada
were told we needed a new transmission = didn’t think so.
found an obscure entry on an online forum that the ground connection underneath the fuse box could be corroded and the lack of proper ground could throw the car into this mode. we cleaned the area, replaced the ground cable and haven’t had the issue since. that was two years ago.
sometimes it can be a coincidence and the error could be a really obscure thing
Fortunately I am under warranty so there is no cost to me! I have been doing so searching and found a Hyundai forum and evidently this is not a unique issue.
There are 5 more cars that came in after mine to the dealership… I just happened to be first. This is going to be a huge issue for Hyundai.
Damn, that is a real obscure problem that caused such a fatal error.
After more research, I think it is a “Chicken or the Egg Problem” Did the engine have an issue the new software update detected or did the software update cause the problem in the engine…
At any rate this is not a unique issue and I would think twice about my purchase if I knew what I know now.

Why can’t foresight have as good of vision as hindsight?
Get that foresight some glasses!
