Cheaper at blade HQ
The VG-10 model is cheaper at Blade HQ. This ZDP steel model is $82 shipped from them.
I am very impressed by this knife. I had my son open a letter with it on father’s day. It slid thru the paper like it was a thin layer of Jello. It is a very useful tool with fabulous steel. Also, with the ZDP steel, it is less likely to chip than the VG10 versions.
ZDP is far harder and more wear resistant than VG10 but that does not necessarily (or usually) translate to being less chippy. What you’re cutting matters, of course, but the high hardness of ZDP 189 blades can sometimes lead to chipping - this is usually in tougher media and when the knife has a lot of force applied to it. What it won’t do in comparison to VG10 is roll or dull as easily.
I certainly wouldn’t worry about chipping, but it is the alloy elements increasing hardness/wear resistance that really draws people to this steel.
