Staples Steno book, 6" x 9", 80 Sheets

Staples Steno book, 6" x 9", 80 Sheets

Description doesn’t specify if it’s ruled for Pitman or for Gregg. Pitmaan (the type I learned) is ruled with narrower lines. The two types of shorthand (steno) books aren’t nterchangeable because taking shorthand depends on muscle memory practice.

It also doesn’t say if the covers are stiff. If they aren’t, it’s only a notebook, not a shorthand book – the covers have to be stiff enough to replace a desktop.

[The newer Mead notebooks sold as steno books are not steno books. Mead refused to refund my money unless I mailed the notebook to them. I don’t know what brand is being offered here but they are too pricey for me to take the chance. It does say Staples but that doesn’t make clear what company manufactures them for Staples.]

Regular rule, same cover as a regular notebook.

(Please Note: I’m not employed by Woot, but I volunteer to help in the forums.)

In stenography there’s no such thing as “regular rule.” The writing area is a different height between the horizontal lines. In Pitman, the pre-drawn lines are closer together. Pitman’s shorter-length characters are one of many features that make for faster writing than Gregg. The 1922 record of 350 wpm maintained (with almost total accuracy) for two minutes still stands. (I achieved only around 60 but that’s all I needed at the time.) The covers have to be just as unyielding as a piece of wood.

As for suitable pencils for Pitman, that’s actually a significantly more complex discussion. (Most newer pencils I’ve tried don’t work at all due to their poor quality.)

Tldr: these are not what you want.

Hi there. These are being obtained from Amazon inventory so we don’t have a lot of information. Here it is on Amazon. There may be more information there.

Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to find an actual steno pad (let alone one specifically for Pitman) anywhere from any source at any price in recent years.

It’s on the back burner for now but I plan to continue searching. (I may have to resort to eBay at some absurd price.)
