Just be aware that these have some sort of plug system that the filters plug into. The filters have a “filter identification chip” and the unit will not run without a filter plugged in. This probably also prevents others from making replacement filters.
This just sold at meh a couple days ago; yes, the filters have a DRM chip that counts down the month. Some have reported that it continues working, albeit with the LED nagging for a replacement.

Are there ANY air cleaners on the market that allow you to replace the filter w/o handing the company your credit card? I mean, is there a air cleaner that will allow you to purchase an inexpensive roll to cut-off your own filter dimensions (like on Amazon)?
Not any I can think of. The big round Honeywell air cleaners (like the 50250) uses a flat pre-filter, but the inner HEPA filter is still its own design.
Like printers, having third party options is a key to keeping its lifetime costs in check. That may mean spending more on the machine upfront for lower ongoing costs.
