Same article I linked to above
Does anybody know if these are still certified kosher? Can’t find anything reliable through googling
Oh why did I click over here, totally expecting to see wine but finding instead torturously tempting truffles. Trying…to…resist, but it’s so hard if it’s good chocolate.
Dunno, but am also curious. And I’m assuming if they are, they’re kosher-dairy, but if they’re parve, I’d LOVE to know that information too.
EDIT: Nevermind. Did some googling… The DeBas factory is certified as organic by the State of California, in addition to being Orthodox Kosher certified. It’s near the bottom of page 1 of the linked article. Now, of course, that article is almost 3 years old and that’s a lifetime in the world of kosher certification, but… it’s a start.
Wow! Very impressive and suprising show from Woot!
Now, if i only had someone to send this to.
So is the fresh cream inside like a cream filling? i don’t quite get it.
Tried to resist, lasted over a half hour, then failed… Had to order these before going to sleep. Will dream now of little truffles… très délicieux. I love/hate you tonight Woot.
Ummm, they are obviously NOT parve…they are made with cream. I believe that clearly makes them dairy!
I said that I assumed as much, but you never know what kind of nondairy creams or soy milks can be slipped in to recipes. Besides, a girl can hope can’t she? I like having chocolate for dessert but that usually means no meat for dinner. Sigh… definitely one of the bigger down sides to keeping kosher in my opinion.
I should get this, wear my dragontines day shirt , and pick up a new hunny bunny.
Not kosher myself, but have lots of friends who do keep kosher.
Meat dinner + dark chocolate dessert = kosher OR just wait a few hours then room for lots of truffles and all is “kosher”. However you do it, ENJOY!
Absolutely! Who could resist?
Hoping to get Guy to chime in at some point. an interesting figure to be sure.
Good truffles easily go for multiple times this amount. Definitely worth a try.
My main concern is not being able to get more when they run out. The fact that they’re listed as being made by Guy Debas and not Debas Chocolatier makes me wonder if he’s started another new venture of his own.
p.s. Guy, I found a decent little Lebanese place in Richardson, Afrah, in case you’re down this way for a face to face meeting with Woot.
After reading this, I may have to hunt down the wine filled chocolate…
Down in Fresno eh???
One of these days, I’m going to log on here and find a new woot site…
cheese.woot!
Really, Woot Gods, chocolate is nice - but cheese and wine would probably make you a lot of money! Right?
Just a (dreamy) thought.
Valentine’s Day would be so much easier if my wife didn’t hate chocolate. =(
Cheese I could have resisted…maybe. Chocolate…not so easy…you can tell by the multiple bars of Amano Chocolate in my pantry…
Although I generally stick to dark chocolate truffles, this is a pretty intriguing offering. The truffles I usually get generally run $16 for 8 pieces (albeit probably larger pieces), although it is hard to compare price-wise since the write-up doesn’t specify the weight—funny that. Nevertheless, comparing chocolates by price is like comparing wines by price. Would you really criticize the wine sold here earlier this week because you could easily get a 3 liter box of not-disgustingly-awful cabernet for $20? Chocolate is the same. Comparison with what I usually get is, however, a more fair comparison, since that is really good chocolate.
On the other hand, people are willing to pay unbelievable prices for Godiva chocolate, which to me most closely resemble those little paraffin candies I used to have as a kid—lots of chew, with a flavor that most closely resembles wax. In fact, people wait in line to for them. (Even my wife acknowledges the lousiness of Godiva chocolates, but still likes them anyway because they are pretty.)
I look forward to hearing from Mr. Debas himself. I am curious, however, how it can be that neither he nor his corporate parent seem to have a working website. Even more curious is the following SEC filing by the House of Brussels (apparently a Canadian company, by the way):
On September 19, 2006, Laurus Master Funds (“Laurus”) appointed Abakhan & Associates Inc. as Receiver of all collateral assets held by Brussels Chocolates Limited, one of our wholly owned subsidiaries. This appointment was undertaken in connection with the seizure of assets in accordance with the security interests of Laurus arising from our March 29, 2005 indebtedness with them.
This, coupled with a flurry of high-level resignations in late 2006 or early 2007 seems an odd portent. What does it all mean?
For myself! Not sharing!
