T-shirt Design Process and Tutorial

Goofy question, Jimi, but how many legs does that thar horse have? I count five just in the picture. That’s one freaky horse…

I get six, there’s a lighter one by the griffins (?) head - it’s like where’s Waldo. I find this whole thing fascinating though, I’m not patient enough to read tutorials so this is perfect and the videos have the bonus of being bleeping funny.

The GIMP program is great! There’s a link on the site that lets you d/l the whole program and install like you do anything else, so you don’t have to mess with the source code stuff. I’m having fun figuring out how to use it. Thanks!!!

If you really want to punish yourself, you can play around with Inkscape. It’s a free program similar to Adobe Illustrator. I’m having fun with it, and the cheapo tablet I got for my kid recently. I’m still trying to get her to make something for a derby.

Heh, I did.

Like Air and Death Cab for Cutie while you work, eh?

Nice to see other people have tunes on while working…

Jimi, I have to thank you. You have single-handedly taught me to use the pen tool, just in these two videos. You’re awesome.

I’ll check it out, thank you. Still deciding which tablet to get. I am also planning to buy a large flat screen monitor soon. I’m gettin’ all technical here!

Nice work easeandgrace . That mermaid illustration is sweet. I never got the hang of watercolors. Requires alot of patience, and theres no Ctrl-Z

SkekTek - That horse has like 6 legs. Dunno. Its just one horse, with many legs. Just wanted to portray action. And yes, I tend to listen to very mellow music.

mihalis / Fenstar / Everyone else… Thanks! I will continue making more craps!

Here’s a video tutorial on a new piece Im workin on. I know, I should finish the Imogen one, but I needed a break from it. I like to capture the ideas when they come to me.

This one I have to say is probably the most stupid yet informative if you catch some of the tricks.

VIDEO LINK: How to clean up lines by creating work paths from selections.

Mainly I use this for smoothing lines I dont make with stroke path.

Your videos are funnier than anything on tv lately! Thanks for the continued help. I really appreciate that you are posting these. They’re kinda like the “You Suck at Photoshop” videos, only actually helpful.

Hee! Nice voice on the third vid. I thought it was some old man teaching new tricks type of voice, not hawking. But otherwise, really fun stuff!

Thanks for the props guys. I enjoy making them.

This one isnt funny. Just straightforward. Allergies have me today, and Im moody.
This one is more about paths, and creating an action.

Why no funny this time? Thanks for putting these up anyways. The thing you are doing that I don’t understand is how you are drawing a curved path so quickly. The only way I know how to do it quickly is to drop the points and then hold alt to switch to the convert point tool, but that doesn’t seem to work on the points at the ends of the line. For the points at the end of the line I’m having to switch manually to the convert point tool, which adds loads of time.

Click Drag?

Make all points by clicking and dragging so they all have two manipulators.
Besides that I use CTRL and ATL for manipulating anchors already placed.
Sometimes SHIFT. SHIFT will snap to 45 degrees angles.

figured it out. thanks.

bump… mainly with just an update on the design and just a few tips.

did you know, if you want to merge all visible layers, you can

CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-N (for new layer without prompt)
CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-E

quite useful, you have to have limber fingers.
if someone want me to draw it out like guitar tabs, i can do that. ;j

BTW.

Here is how I have the layers set up.

Black is set to MULTIPLY. And I paint on it with black or white. Anything under it, even if it is overlapping, will still show up black.

White layer is set to LIGHTEN. Anything under it will be turned to white.
Its below the BLACK layer, because black layer is the outline, it doesnt need to be overlapped.

Gray layer is set to DARKEN. There is nothing but base under it. I ALSO paint on this layer with only black and white. The only difference is that I reduce opacity to achieve a lower tone. WHY? As noted in the last tutorials, using black and white ink, is efficient. If I used a gray tone, that would have to make me choose a specific gray from a swatch box, as opposed to using black and white.

To reiterate previous tips,

‘X’ will switch foreground/background colors.

‘D’ will reset the FG/BG colors to balck and white.

VIOLA!
