Sometimes it really hurts to see something on woot that I just bought two weeks prior for full price.
Its a great little thermometer. After using it twice it makes it seem like my cumulative experience at cooking, grilling, and smoking was just dumb, primitive guesswork before using them.
The good: I just pulled off a perfect brisket this weekend for the first time ever. There are more than enough probes to conduct the most complicated of cooks, and the graphing feature on the app helps keep you ahead of the temperature swing, allowing you either add fuel or shut dampers before the swing actually happens. It also lets you predict when the dreaded “stall” happens inside a cut of meat, giving you the choice of wrapping in foil or just waiting it out. The only thing left to worry about is running out of beverages.
The bad: a) One of the temperature probes is not reading accurately at low temperatures. Replacements can be found easily enough at amazon. Sticking all 6 in an empty oven on preheat mode quickly tells you which ones agree with the rest of the group.
b) After 16 hours spent in the smoker, the probes all have the same color now. The important metal bits wash and clean easily, but the less important silicon colored bits don’t wash so easily. Those parts dont touch the food anyway, so I’m not too worried about them.
c) The phone app sounds like a screeching smoke alarm. I really hated this until I decided to take a quick 15 minute nap during a full day’s cook. Then I really appreciated it.
Overall its a good deal. I recommend buying it.
A few of these really took the guess-work out of a big smoked brisket sale we did recently benefiting Boy Scout troop. By individually managing the temperature in multiple smokers (we had 3 of these across 8 smokers,) we were able to get PERFECT results! Way better than opening up your smoker all the time to get a reading. The wire leads held up to LOTS of abuse. I’m in for one more at this price, as a backup!
Darn, I need a dumb food thermometer!
Thank you, Woot! It’s been a long time since anyone showed interest in my meat.
