Reviews on the Portable Hard Drive over at Amazon

Amazon reviews for the wifi adapter.
Note that it only supports drives up to 2TB.
Here’s the manual.

What is going on here?

Woot shows this drive as having a list price of $199 with a selling price of $79.99 plus the traditional $5 shipping. At first glance, this seems like a good deal…

HOWEVER, Amazon has the same drive listed as having a list price of only $99 with a selling price of $54.99 with FREE shipping. What am I not understanding here? Amazon is $30 less than Woot! Also, Amazon even lists a “newer” model at the same price!

What gives Woot?

[MOD: You didn’t look up both items? You’re getting a DRIVE and a WI-FI ADAPTER.]

Does the Amazon one you are looking at come with the WiFi adapter thingy as well? This price is for both.

Anybody know if the Canvio Wireless Adapter works with Apple’s Time Machine for remote backups?

Some of the Amazon reviews indicate only NTFS-formatted drives can be shared this thing, which suggests no Time Machine access.

No Mac support, per Mothership page. Shame

Can the WiFi adapter stand alone, or does it REQUIRE an Internet connection? In other words, can I take this rig somewhere where there is no Internet service, and set up a closed WiFi network, where attached devices have access to the files on the hard drive? If that’s possible, how secure is this?

based on the FAQ it looks like it can be its own ‘hotspot’. However, it doesn’t have much range - about 5M with smaller distances as you add more devices (according to the FAQ, it’ll support 8 connections).

The FAQ is a little light on details, but it does give more technical info than the manual (referenced above) that’s more interested in explaining the mobile app for this thing then telling you about the device itself.

Can I access the information I have stored here from any of my Wifi devices? or only from the one the information was captured from?

If it is anything like the Seagate Wireless Plus, yes you can. It publishes its own WiFi network that your devices can connect to. I do this from our camper- I ripped all of my movies and watch them at the TVs via a Roku.

No idea security-wise.

This is powered by USB, can it operate on a USB wall charger (that is, NOT connected to a pc) and be able to transmit files via wifi? AND, what if it is plugged into the PC, but the PC is powered off? I power down my PC when I am not home. Then does this still stay on?

Let us all do our homework. Woot, you have a lot of good buys but this is not one of them. A 1TB Toshiba Canvio Basics drive is available on Amazon for $54.99. They have a 2TB for $89.99 and this is free shipping as opposed to your $5.00 add on. Pass!

WiFi adapter is 39.99 from amazon:

So, inc. shipping this is $10 less than the items from Amazon. Meh
