Toshiba 26” LCD HDTV with Built-in DVD Player

Toshiba reliability: about middlin’

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2368161,00.asp

and the chart itself:

I do tend to get wary of any TV “combination” package, i.e., if one component breaks of the two.

I guess the question is whether one trusts TCL as a brand.[/q

ALSO has the 2 year warranty.

Tempting…

This is just the right size for a dorm, bedroom, basement, or if you have a home gym. I have some smallish old tube TVs that could be replaced nicely with this.

Pros - NEW, Very well known brand name, full 1 year warranty, low price.

Cons - perhaps you might stand in line someplace and snag a slightly better deal on Black Friday, would be better as a huge computer monitor if it was 1080p HD (1920x1080).

Will have to sleep on this one. Might be too nice to pass up.

You can load JPGs and MP3s on a thumb drive and view/listen to them through a built-in media player.

Here’s another version of the product website. This one includes product images.

Here’s the product manual. See page 52 for everything that you can do with the USB port.

TCL has 3 rated TV’s on Amazon, 3.5-4.5 stars, the company talks about India and China, bit confusing, just couldn’t find anything on TCL in the PCMag review. For some people, the 3 Amazon rated products are enough to rely on, I agree, but I’m still am looking for one other source of independent info. Not sure how reliable this is, but:

At least Toshiba has a larger sample to evaluate it on (for better or worse).

That’s not the same model. The woot is for model # 26CV100U.

True, the Vizio at Target doesn’t have a DVD player built in but it’s also only $188 after discounts. This woot is $92 more. Plus, Vizio is an LED LCD. Save the $92, get a better TV and buy a stand alone DVD for $25. If you don’t mind paying a premium for having a combo HDTV/DVD then this you can’t go wrong with this Toshiba. Our 52" HDTV is a Toshiba and it’s been wonderful. However, if you’re looking for the best deal on the most current HD technology - the Vizio is a better alternative.

Reprise: Reliability Chart.

Here’s the article it came from (different from PC Mag article linked above).

Once again, Carlton Bale’s article:

1080p Does Matter – Here’s When (Screen Size vs. Viewing Distance vs. Resolution)

90%x90%

At 5 feet or closer, you start to see the benefit of 1080p with a 26" screen.

Ask HD Beat: What’s the deal with 1366 x 768?

mmmm…Pumpkin pie.

Description says “Output Ports: (1) Digital audio out (DVD only) (side)” but picture shows optical digital out on back and headphone out on the side. Also, the picture seems to show PC audio in jack on back, which isn’t listed. Just sayin…

If digital audio out is really “DVD only” that’s a little disappointing.

Usually the USB port is Used for firmware updates, most all TV’s have them, and they are marked as “service” most DVD/blu ray players have them as well. it appears that not only can you update firmware on this tv, but you can also play your personal digital files from a USB drive.

Good luck when you need it serviced. I had a similar model it broke in first 2 months and it took three months to get someone at Toshiba to refund me NO parts available- rude techs and customer support.

I am curious, can this TV be mounted on a wall with a bracket like a larger plasma?

This has nothing to do with the current item for sale, but today is my 6th Woot-iversary!

I’ve been Wooting since 11/22/2004!

Thanks Woot! for all the good times, all the good items, and the 13 bags of crap that actually held some kewl items.

8.5 ms response time? You can do far better than that for the same price elsewhere.

If it’s like my TV, it’s used as a media input for MP3s, .avi files, etc as well as loading new firmware updates to the CPU.

Here I think.

32 inch TCL for $250.

Check out the price on this today on Best Buy. $100 more.

Haha That’s exactly what I’m gong to do with this - replace the tube TV in my home gym!
