Ordered one and set it up for a friend. It would be a good deal at $100 more. Dumped Winblows first thing and set it up with Ubuntu and it seems lightening fast in what little time I had with it. Very thin and light considering the screen real estate and the DVD burner. Touchpad was a little oversensitive, but that’s adjustable and I’m heavy handed. Transfer was quick from USB3 and I saw no faultering or buffering of videos.
Yes, Windows 10 will be offered free to all legitimate Windows 8 and 7 installs. Meaning, I assume, that you will need the install key, but I don’t think that has been announced yet.
Although I’m not a huge fan of W8, it does have a smaller resource footprint than W7. I just use classic shell (free download) and pretend it’s W7. I never even go to the tile part, I just stick to the desktop.
W8 does not come with mediacenter, so if that might be a stopper for a few people, if they have certain stuff that works with windows mediacenter
Seems like a pretty decent deal for a budget 17 inch laptop. Switch out the HDD for an SSD and get a huge performance boost. Get a USB enclosure for the HDD and use that as an external HDD- I would partition it and keep the OS on one partion as a back-up, then the other partition can be used for storage.
A bit late with this comment, but Windows10 (yeah, they skipped 9) is going to be free to anyone who has 7 or 8 loaded, and it looks to be better. Personally, everything I buy gets Linux loaded first thing, but that’s just me.
