Not sure about the refurb part, but I have this DVD played and I honestly love it. Especially because it plays DivX.
When the new price is $80, $30 is EXCELLENT. But as I just saw and corrected myself, it ain’t a deal when there’s tons of complaints about it being a bad product to begin with. 
Then again, if it’s a refurb (ROXORZ!), hopefully they fixed it.
