TOTU USB 4K Docking Station

This kinda sucks, ngl

What sucks about it? 4K@60Hz on DP ain’t bad. Better than a lot of docking stations I’ve seen.

Better than some, but 4k60 via DP is a low bar these days. HDMI 2.0 should do 4k60 easily, and DP 1.4 can drive 4k144+. The power delivery option isn’t terrible, and it does a lot with the ports it has, but $100 for USB 3.1 bandwidth, 10gbps max, is a bit much. USB 4.0 does 20-40gbps, thunderbolt 3 must reach 40gbps, and thunderbolt 4 requires bidirectional 40gbps along with pcie tunneling.
USB 3.1 is ideal for USB hubs or extenders, but limits bandwidth for video pretty seriously, forcing it into a compressed format that will inevitably lose you detail. Look for 4:4:4 compression, and if that’s unlisted the compression is likelier at 4:2:2 or 4:2:0, which looks similar but on close inspection much worse.
TL;DR: A used thunderbolt 3 box should run a similar price for better performance and peripheral support, but this will work fine for any older laptops without better USB C throughput.

Good question! The size and weight are pretty nice all told, it just crunches transmissions too much for my taste; if you can stomach some oddities this would be fine. I’m a priss about this stuff lmao

And the better option immediately: Kensington Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station
