Based on the description and product specs provided, the Tempest 90 or 130 refers roughly to the square feet of tarp coverage provided. However, (even allowing for the concave edge design) you get 90sqft of coverage with a tarp approx 9’6" on a side, not the 13’9" specified. (the 130 model calculates to 11’4", not 16’8".)

So, either the tarps provide more coverage than specified by the model # or they are dimensionally smaller than indicated.

Am I reading this incorrectly?

I think it may be a diagonal measurement. It would come out to 16’ 1" if tarp was square, which it isn’t.

So does anyone really know the actual dimensions of the two tarps?

If the listing is correct,

Tempest 90 Tempest 130
Dimensions:
13’9" x 13’9" 16’8" x 16’8"
Total Weight:
24.6 oz. 33.5 oz.
Materials:
190T Polyester/PU1000mm

rraazz had it right they are generally square and the dimension given is the diagonal. This is because the it is not a true square, the corners come out so that there is no straight line along the edge. This can make it less likely for the wind to catch the edge, but it is mainly useful for hammocks when hung in the diamond pattern. A square corner tarp is better as a rainfly.

These are super useful if your into the outdoors…they also have many other applications when used with 2 poles. For ideas of use and a better understanding of the shape dimensions and why it’s cut in the way that it is; look in youtube at vids for the Kelty Noahs Tarp. That should help.
