They are both pretty amazing right now. The 2001 has more potential for long term aging if that’s your thing.
2001 was an all around great vintage. 2002 was one of those chameleon vintages. Cab was uneven that year. It’s the one vintage we “declassified” the Handal-Denier; it had really nice fruit, but was 16% alcohol and 3.15pH after MLF. (It was very surprising that it even completed MLF.) On the other hand, Syrah was a standout. Even after cherry-picking 9 barrels for the Reserve, the “regular” 2002 Syrah was stupendous.

Hi Peter- this is actually my first post but I have enjoyed your wines immensely since they have shown up on my radar! Purchased two of the Victory magnums earlier today and in for one of each of these Syrahs… This is better than Christmas!
One question while you are on board- a few have commented and I am curious as well… Not too long ago you offered Cab mags and a few of us had received bottles with the date changed with a black marker to reflect 1990. Can you share with us the story behind that?

Certainly. We store a lot of the magnums unlabelled. In fact, I am in the midst of putting labels on 1991 Victory right now.
In your case, I didn’t have any 1990 Random Ridge Cabernet labels, but I had some 1991 labels that I “modified”.

Sorry to be so ‘out of touch’ (since WOOT could no longer ship to Virginia) I haven’t been following along.
I’m visiting the Sonoma valley in October. Is Wellington Vineyards still run by Peter Wellington and open?
I’ve seen confusing info elsewhere that suggested 1) it was taken over (by VRB?) 2) Has new management 3) was closed for renovations
Would love to visit in October.
