Did you ever have thick pile carpeting installed…and when you put your doors back on they just don’t fit? Well that’s where this tool shines. You could use a portable circular saw to do the job or even a belt sander but neither of them give you a clean edge and a true edge. The electric portable planer is the best and probably ONLY tool for the job.

Unfortunately, I can’t think of too many practicle applications for this tool besides cleanly cutting down doors. I owned one of these tools about 30 years ago when all tools were made of metal. After cutting down doors in my house, and not being able to think of any other practicle use for the tool, I gave it away.

I still use a jointer, which is a stationary version of this tool (I own 2 of them). A jointer is a planer where you take the work to the tool rather than the tool to the work. My small one weighs about 120 lbs while my larger one weighs over 300 lbs. However, while the stationary and the portable planers are similar, they do not perform the same function.

Having said that, this planer is certainly a nice one to have in your shop. For under $50, it’s a great price.

That’s a funny looking planner.

Planer? I don’t know; it looks pretty fancy to me.

I’m seeing it for $69.99 (& free shipping), can you post a link if you’re seeing it somewhere for less?

With Amazon as the seller it is the lower price (although it lists 4-7 weeks out for delivery) directly from Wen it is $69.99:

I prefer a helicopterer.

Yup, cheaper from Amazon after shipping. A sad trend continues…

“The only constant in life is change son.”

My Daddy, gone now for a decade and a half told me that.

“Son you have to roll with the punches.”

He told me that too.

“Why don’t you buckle down and fly right?”

That one used to piss me off.

He always used a planer that looked like this:

is the harbor frieght one worse?

my father in law has this model:

its $55 minus 20% coupon.

it works fantastic and looks very similar.

http://www.harborfreight.com/3-1-4-quarter-inch-electric-planer-95838.html is much cheaper, may be enough for many. also has 20% coupon

Your daddy, bless his soul, gave you the right information. Regarding the planer he used…he had no choice but to use that planer, as it was probably the only one available in his time. Today I have an 8 inch planer that weighs about 300 lbs. and can do what your father’s planer could do except MUCH better and about a thousand time faster. (It probably costs about a thousand times more as well)

“Well son, it’s not always how fast you get there, but HOW you get there.”

Keep 'em coming acanarelli; I can do this all day long.

Actually I can’t…I’ve got to get some rest before tonight

But I’ll peek in later lol.

It’s very difficult to compare the Harbor Frieght models with the Wen models. This is because Wen offers a 2 year warranty with all their machines and Harbor Freight only offers a 90 day exchange. This alone will always give the advantage to Wen instead of HF.

Nevertheless, the Wen and the HF machines are probably made in the same factory. The Wen sold here for example is powered by a 6 amp motor while the more expensive HF model (they have two) is 7.5 amp. If I were to buy one, my choice would be the Wen.

It looks like the Amazon price is $60.57 now with Prime. Am I seeing that right?
