3.5"

2.5 is for laptop hard drives

thanks. but then waht is the 5.5 for?

5.5 drives are full size cdroms, dvd drives. Really really old hard drives

thanks. i guess u learn something new every day. i learned 2 things today :stuck_out_tongue:

Perhaps its a user error. I have bought 6 of these, not a single problem with any of them. Once you partition the drive (which you have to do with all brand new HDD), they run just fine. Yes they arnt the quickest, and yes there is other HDD’s out there (SATA) i have a Mobo that supports both EIDE and SATA, for the price and the amount of data, these are great! SATA runs super fast, but if your not hosting or running servers, whats the point? These transfer at a suitable rate, if you have any incling of patients. If you think your getting ripped off cause your windows doesnt detect the full 250GB, thats normal for windows XP. It only detects a certain amount, but yes its all there. No IDE cable you say? well then you should be mad at your mobo company not these guys, your mobo only supports 2 IDE channels to begin with, using a primary and slave on both channels, so 4 total. Mobo manufacture should have sent those cables in there when you bought your motherboard, my Gigabyte K8N came with 2 when i bought it, also came with 4 SATA cables for all 4 SATA lines. If you buy it pre-setup from a company such as dell, HP, Gateway. They usually set them up to where your cd-rom drive/dvd-drive and HDD that comes with it are on seperate IDE cables, so you should have 2 already in there. Or like most people who get 2 cd/dvd drives, and 1 harddrive, it should be there regardless! You people complain to much, and/or dont know how to properly hookup a HDD. If you hook it up right, there is no overheating or noise. These things run really quite. If you go to the WD website, they have 2 utilities you can download to check the drives out once installed. Maybe you have the PM/PS or SM/SS hooked up wrong. If that is it, try putting the jumper on cable select. If none of this made sense, then you should take the HDD to a professional and have them install it. Ive worked with computers since i was 10. At first it can be confusing. Something as simple as a jumper or switch, could be why its not working for you, or overheating. I quoted one post, but im refering to alot of the others under here. My setup is very nice and quick, AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual core processor, 4 gig dual channel ram, 2 GeForce 7800GTX 256mb videocards running in SLi config on the Gigabyte K8N Pro SLi mobo w/ dual bios, 2 cd/dvd burners, 2 HDD’s (both WD 250GB), 19" Benq 2ms response 800:1 comp. ratio, all stuck into a nice silver case with 3 gages on it to make sure it runs right  and my harddrives do not lag up, run to slow, overheat, arnt noisy, or anything else. I am a huge gamer, do alot of webdesign, have a few servers up, and do video/graphics editing. Until i need to expand to my 4 SATA lines, im sticking with my EIDE’s. These are a good deal for the price.

Last I heard they had upped thier prices on all drives to just about under $20 retail.

Probably not since its refurb. I was 1 of 2 with the 250gb (woot having to send me a replacement). In fact the working rate on all refurb items I have bought has been less than 50%, this includes non computer products, believe me I don’t shy away from refurbs too often. So if the likelihood of a defective product rather than it being a user error is pretty high in the case, especially when its something as mechanically dependent as a hard drive. Since Woot replaced it for completely no cost, I’d buy again if needed.

I know what the heck I’m doing, thank you very much, and a drive being completely DOA is NOT user error. Nor is a drive failing it’s SMART checks and failing badblocks testing with pages and pages of bad sectors “user error”. I used to assume “refrubished” meant they at least fixed and tested them before reselling, now I’m not so sure.

Perhaps your are correct in your case. But not everyone has the technical experience to know if it actually bad or just a “user error”. I have friends call me all the time about a broken pc that in actuality, they did something wrong. You would be surprised (maybe not) how many people think everything they buy for a PC today is plug ‘n’ play. Yes the vast majority is, still some stuff isnt. I wasnt trying to directly blame you for a user error, it was more of a general statement for those people who do not have the technical ability to fully troubleshoot the product before assuming it is or is indeed DOA. Yes it happens especially on refurb items, I was more or less letting the general population with no technical experience know that, hey maybe its alright i just need some help with it. Didnt mean to make it seem like i was belittling anyone, i apologize if it seemed that way. From my experience with HDD’s, 9/10 its not a bad drive at all, something is just not connected right, or windows XP or other OS, will install the wrong drivers and it seems like it is bad. Once again sorry  Happy WOOT-OFF (hopefully the darn vacuum gets gone soon!)

what farking rock have i been living under. had no idea about a woot off

I picked up one of these drives and just recently got around to installing it. Almost immediately it started reporting SMART errors and occasionally making clicky noises. Funny thing is, it seems to hold data OK, but won’t boot an OS due to the SMART errors. I’ve reformatted, repartitioned, and zeroed the drive several times, and I got nothin’. Anyone have any ideas before I give up and return it?

I bought two of these from a previous woot, and one was DOA, the other was fine. I emailed woot for an RMA and had the replacement very quickly. It worked fine. I tested all the drives with the WD tools. I am happy enough that I ordered another one during the woot-off. I’d say don’t bother messing with it anymore, especially if it clicks. get it replaced.

I received my HD today. So start expecting them if you haven’t already.

Received my drive today as well. Thanks Woot!!

I received mine today, but after placing a bunch of data on it, its SMART says it’s failing. Looks like it’s time to request a replacement.

Recived my drive as well. Just copied a bunch of data too it after I formatted it. Doesn’t make any clicking noises, doesn’t seem to run hot, and the transfer went pretty quick. I’ll put it through some tests to see how it holds up, but so far good buy.

Received my drive the day before yesterday, and I cloned my main 80 gb drive over to this 250 gb drive and so far so good. I’m doing an experiment to see how well this drive holds up to everyday normal use. There is no overheating that some have experienced and it runs very quite. The two things I do notce about this drive are, it takes a little longer to boot my computer(added a few more seconds) and, the hard drive light on the front of my computer case stays on dimmly when idle and gets brighter when being accessed. I can live with both these symptoms, and for the price, you just can’t beat the deal, I mean without having to deal with rebate trickery and all. So far, very satisfied.

my 3 arrived yesterday.

one is dead, how do i get a replacement?

Mine is on its way!
