i’ve never purchased from woot, and am always wary of buying “factory reconditioned/refurbished/used” etc electronics.
i see they claim a 1 year yamaha warranty, but does that mean i have to take my product to the nearest service center if anything goes wrong? and is woot an authorized seller for yamaha?
any feedback is appreciated. sorry for my ignorance.
I have this receiver bought from Amazon a couple of years back new…I used it as my 8 zone music streaming device with a switch and amplifiers to the outside…The app is also pretty nice…More music than you could ever want…
I buy all home electronics refurb and often from here, including a home PC. My case may be an exception, but I haven’t had an issue with any refurbed product. Each have looked and worked as good as new.
If it’s a Yamaha refurb, I suspect you can have warranty work performed at any Yamaha service center.
I got the TSR-5810 from the last Woot and absolutely love it. Apparently this one is 20 better, so you’ve got that going this time around. I had 5.1 sound before and I’m sold on Atmos. The Yamaha YPAO speaker config makes it all brainless. The Dolby Atmos site has exactly what you need to understand the speaker arrangements. I had an existing 5.1 speaker setup and went with the 5.1.2 option (minimum recommended). It’s technically 3 front / 2 surround for the first “5”, then “1” for the sub and “2” for ceiling. The spec goes up to 9.2.4 but I personally have no interest in that many speakers, nor an understanding how 2 subs is an advantage. This particular amp only supports 7 amped speakers with two sub pre-outs, so you can do up to 7.2 classic surround, or 5.2.2 Atmos. https://www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/dolby-atmos-speaker-setup/5-1-2-setups.html
I agree. With vinyl making a comeback it would be nice to include phono inputs on receivers again. What’s really annoying is even many high-end receivers haven’t brought back the phono input. I know you can get a preamp- but why?
Are you sure you need that? A lot of turntables have a built in preamp so you could use any of the audio inputs. Even if you need it, you could pick up a separate phono preamp and not have to worry about compatibility ever again.
I’ve purchased several refurbished electronics from Woot; TV’s, sound bars, computers, laptops, cellphones, Bluetooth devices, etc. and have had no issues whatsoever. I recently purchased a sound bar that was missing some unessential accessory items and Woot refunded me $60 to buy them.
They should list this as a 5.2.2 ATMOS. It confuses people to see it as “7.2 ATMOS” as that’s impossible as you duly noted.
People fail to realize that by enabling ATMOS, you are giving up 2 speakers unless you physically add 2 more (which would require a bigger amp than this one).
For me, ceiling speakers do not trump surround. there are far more audio signals coming from surrounds than from above. plus there are very few movies which actually encode true atmos sounds from above.
I had 5.1 for years. Upgraded to 7.1 and could not believe the difference. Makes 5.1 sound like old stereo!!!
Recently, I up’d again to 9.2.2 after purchasing a powerful monster sony amp. I have 9 actual ear-height surrounds, 2 actual ceiling-mounted speakers for ATMOS, and 2 subs. Absolutely incredible sound.
Never buy those atmos “directional” speakers you put in front that point the sound to the ceiling. Complete waste of money. If you can’t install true ceiling speakers, you’re not ready for atmos yet. it sounds 100% different with true ceiling sources.
Why 2 subs you ask? Well, if your movie room has sound-dampening things (as it should) such as carpet, lots of couches, acoustical tile or curtained walls, etc… you will need the extra sub placed kitty corner or equi-distant to the first one else you will be able to tell where the bass is coming from, which is actually extremely distracting and lessens the whole audio experience! Bass is never directional and should be felt and never “heard” if you get what I mean.
