4,8 or 12 Piece Glass Canister Set

ARGH!!!

Made in China.

Foiled again! :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Is that bad? I’d think glass would be a simple thing to make well.

Making something well and making something safe are two different things.

Yes, glass is mostly made of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) or silica; but some glassware made outside the U.S. have been shown to contain harmful levels of elements such as lead, cadmium, and barium.

Many reputable glassware manufacturers both in the U.S. and Europe tend to add potassium oxide (K₂O), zinc oxides (ZnO), sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃), and calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) into the manufacturing of glassware products that come into contact with anything humans may consume. The FDA has deemed those compounds “safe” for now.

We would love to think everyone values life the same, but we can’t seem to forget the 2008-milk-formula-melamine scandal. As a result, we try to avoid products made where the manufacturing process may be questionable.

Since we are looking for glass canisters to store foodstuffs (e.g., dried pastas, herbs, and other cooking/baking ingredients), we would prefer to purchase either U.S. or European-made glassware from a reputable company.

We are caring for friends and family who were exposed to some very nasty chemicals and conditions while serving in the military. We would rather not raise the level of suffering by using glassware containing harmful elements if we can avoid it. That is why we research and ask questions before buying.

We apologize to our fellow Wooters (one or two in particular) if they find one or both us “annoying” with our posts and questions in the forums. We are just trying to do the best with what we have, and sometimes that includes posting questions to either Woot moderators or the Woot community and reading their responses. We trust the Woot community to be more adult, fair, and honest over the reviews at the mothership site. :person_shrugging:
