800 TC 100% Egyptian Cotton Sheets

800 TC 100% Egyptian Cotton Sheets

What sort are these in terms of ply and weave

I’ve bought these: 800TC 100% Egyptian Cotton Sheet Set and they were FANTASTIC

and these: Exquisite Hotel 600TC 100% Egyptian Cotton Sheet Sets and they were AWFUL

Its not clear which these new ones are more like

I have no direct knowledge of these sheets but just from what you posted: the wonderful sheets are 800tc and the awful ones are 600tc. The sheets from this wood sale say 800tc.

What type of finish do these sheets have?

I just found the dreaded word, sateen in the description.

Kenaidog…is sateen no good for high quality sheets?

Sateen is simply the type of weave and has no relation to quality. Sateen feels smooth and silky. Some people also like percale weave. There can be high quality sheets made with either weave. Personally, I prefer sateen. I have some sateen sheets that have lasted many, many years over hundreds of washings and they’re still luxurious.

The quality of the sheets has more to do with the type of cotton and how fine the thread is which is affected by how long the fibers are. Fine thread allow higher thread count but some companies boost their thread count by using a thread made from several threads and counting each. These are not as nice as the sheets with high thread counts due only to fine thread from long fibers. As an example they might use a thread made from 4 lower quality threads twisted together. They then weave a cloth that is 250 thread count for the weave but count the twisted thread as 4 threads instead of one. In that way they claim a 1000 thread count for what is really a 250 count weave.

As to Percale vs. Sateen neither is really higher quality than the other. It is more what you like. In sateen the weave is one thread over then under. In percale the thread may go over 2 to 4 cross threads before it goes back under for 1. This means on one side you have more smooth threads next to each other. This is why the Sateen has a smooth, shiny side and Percale is the same on both sides.

The advantage for sateen is for the same quality, the shiny side will be softer and smoother. It also tends to wrinkle a bit less. Sateen will also be a bit thicker.

Percale sides are both the same. Due to the weave it is a little more durable. It will also be a bit thinner and more breathable.

So neither one is better. It is just what you prefer. As to quality it is more important how good the cotton is. Thread count matters but it helps if you know if it is a 1 ply thread or multi. For cotton you won’t get much more than 500-800 count with a single ply but these can be very nice sheets. So a single ply 600 count will typically be nicer than a 4 ply 1000 count.

Anyone else kind of upset that most bedding descriptions focus on thread count and I have to read through the entire listing just to find out whether these are percole/sateen. Let me not even get started on attempting to determine what staple these are…

What ply are these?

@daveinwarshington
I think you’re the resident “ply” expert. :wink:
