80x100 HD Monoculars Telescope for Adult

There are about a dozen offerings of this item on Amazon under various “brands” but they are all the same and all have the same issues. I actually bought three of the ones that are listed as “Amazon Prime” with guaranteed free returns just to check this out. The were all listed as different brands, they cost 30 -55 dollars, yet they all arrived in exactly the same box with exactly the same contents. My take on these:
At $30 it is an “OK” .monocular. There is an adjustment at the side that says 80-100 and since this moves the front element forward / back it is a “zoom”, not as I had hoped a “focus” adjustment. There is a ring at the eyepiece that has a “wedge” shape imprinted in it that is what passes for a focus, I guess the wedge thickness equates to the distance, but be careful as there is no stop and it will easily screw completely off (!!). Then there is the “smartphone mount” (what most users would buy this for). I had several problems here: 1) Since I have an Android phone, as most of those do the camera is at the top. The adjusting bar is too short, and must be fully extended, even then the clamp is holding down the phones volume buttons. If you’re lucky it will only hit one, on my Pixel it was hitting both and the phone kept taking this as a reset request. 2) When the adjusting bar is extended more than 1/2 way, because it is thin plastic it flexes and the camera lens does not stay at the correct angle so you are now looking into the scope at its’ inner wall. Several heavy rubber bands at the monocular end controlled that. 3) The monocular distance to your phones’ camera lens must be just right or you will never get focus. And you have to be able to get your phones focus too “lock” (turn off auto focus) and most people don’t know how to do that or even if their phone can do that. 4) That “focus ring” I mentioned earlier, is going to end up inside of the adapter “cup”. That means set the focus and THEN put it on your phone, as you can’t get at it later. If you are taking pictures / video of truly distant objects (moon, stars, etc.) you can just go to full “far” but if you just want something across your street - good luck.
In case you were wondering, yes I actually opened all three and put them through the same paces. Then I gave them all pack to Amazon.

Buyer beware! The title on this telescope is misleading. The standard description of binoculars and telescopes uses 80x100 to mean that the magnification is 80 times with a 100mm objective lens, which would be really great if it were true. If you read down in the description you find that the magnification is 12 times with a 50mm objective. Therefore, this is really a 12x50 telescope which is very mediocre. This is false advertising!
